Introduction, August 17-23

Hello students and welcome to Counseling 120, College and Career Success! Take a look at my video introduction above.

This class is especially useful for those of you who want to understand yourself better and choose a major and career that matches your gifts and talents. The class also meets a general education requirement for transfer to state universities. If this is your first class in college, you are off to a good start. If you are a continuing student, there are some great benefits. You will become familiar with some new learning tools that will make your future education easier.

Since the course is online, you can do the work anytime or any place during the week. For best results, be sure to set aside time for working on this class each week and not wait until the last minute to do the work. I look forward to working with all of you this semester.

Please make 2 postings this week.  Each posting should be a minimum of 100 words.

1. For the first posting, introduce yourself by telling us about your interests, hobbies and what is important in your life, and maybe share a photo or video of yourself.  See my introduction below.

2.  As your second posting, tell us about your educational journey.  Where did you attend school before?  Why you are taking this class and what are your goals and dreams for the future? What is your current educational goal? See my educational journey below.

You can also comment on other students' postings.

Marsha Fralick’s Introduction
Here is an example of a 100 word introduction:

I am your professor for Counseling 120. I retired from Cuyamaca College where I worked from 1978-2007 as a counselor and instructor for this course. I play many roles in life. I am a Grandmother with 2 young granddaughters. I enjoy taking care of them frequently and watching them grow. My own children are grown up and have their own careers and homes. I have my own business and work with colleges across the country in training faculty to teach college success courses.  I am also the author of your textbook.  In my leisure time I enjoy traveling and being active.

Marsha Fralick’s Educational Journey

Here is an example of a 100 word posting.

I attended a small country high school in New Mexico and was a good student. When I went to the University of New Mexico, I found that it was a whole new world and I was not prepared for it. I struggled to be successful in college and had to learn how to listen to lectures, take notes and prepare for exams. I also had uncertain career goals. When I started working at a college, I remembered those years that I struggled and decided to invent a course that would help students to be successful. It has been a fun and rewarding adventure for the last 37 years.

  1. Hello my name is Theresa Marocco and i am 17 years old and I graduated from El Capitan high school this year. In high school I was involved in the AVID, Vcrew & peer tutoring programs. I also played soccer, tracked & field and cross country while in high school. I have played soccer since i was four years old. I don't play sports anymore because of a knee injury but i like to stay active and go running as much as possible and I am also starting to do yoga. Besides sports I have been raising and showing livestock since I was 9 years old. Showing my animals is what I have a passion for and it really helps me stay driven and shows that hard work truly does pay off.

  2. Hi my name is theresa and this is my second post and I started out my schooling my going to Lindo Park Elementary, Tierra Del Sol Middle School and El Capitan High School. I am taking this class to help me stay organized and be successful in high school. Many people have told me it is a very good idea to take this class and it is really helpful. After completing my general education at cuyamaca I am going to hopefully transfer to the University of California Davis and from there i would like to major in animal science. My goals for after schooling is to become a large animal veterinarian and be able to learn much more about the animals I raised in Sagebrush 4H all my life and be able to give back to my community and all the young 4H members.

  3. Hello class! My name is Natalie Furois and my hair is so long it almost goes to my mid-thigh (yes that’s my idea of a grabber). ANYWAY I’m 19, currently employed and living in my parents’ house until I finish my educational journey at Cuyamaca College. When I’m not working, I like to draw, hula hoop, read, mess around with my special effects makeup, weave my own bracelets, or just go out and admire the art in nature with my boyfriend & friends. I believe proactively living a healthy lifestyle by eating well and exercising is the key to being happy in this lifetime. Having a healthy vessel, body and mind, to be capable of going out into the world and making the most of my time alive is the main goal in my lifetime.

  4. So this is my first semester of college. I took a year off from school after graduating with honors from Steele Canyon in June 2014 to get a feel for what life is like without a formal education. I realized that I DO need a degree to get to where I need to be, so here I am! I have a great appreciation for all art forms, however, I do not think I can be as successful in that area as I would expect myself to be. That being said, I feel like I want a career working to protect the plants and creatures that are left on this earth. It is our home and we have done nothing but foolishly use up our natural resources and selfishly eradicate species for our own ends. If we continue as a society to stick to our destructive habits, renewable resources will become unrenewable, then what will be left for our children and generations to come? The first step in my journey is to get my Associates in Botany from Cuyamaca, then transfer to Humbodlt State to get a Bachelors in either Environmental Management & Protection or Environmental Science, with a minor in Forestry. I wanted to take this class to see if this is what I really want to do with my life. My biggest fear is waking up when I’m 40 and thinking “Why did I pick THIS career path?” then realizing I have nothing to show for my life’s work. Being a part of helping to conserve our earth for future generations seems like something of importance due to our current environmental struggles all over the world. –Natalie Furois

  8. Hi everyone my name is Heather. I'm 21 years old and the oldest child in the family. I was born here in San Diego and never plan on leaving. (It's beautiful here!) I live at home with family and I appreciate them letting me do as I finish up my schooling. I'm currently a licensed cosmetologist and I work full time at a salon in Fashion Valley doing hair. I've been doing hair for about 3 years now and I enjoy the creative aspect of it. I love my job and I never dread waking up every morning to go talk to and beautify my clients. Family is everything to me so when I'm not working I'm always with them. I also enjoy going to the gym and working out when I get the chance, reading books, cooking and watching good movies.

  9. As far as my education, I graduated Valhalla highschool in 2012. I wasn't sure on what I wanted to do and ended up doing what I know I love for sure so I got my cosmetology license within that same year. During the few years I've just been working but I always had the thought of going back to school in mind. I figured even with taking a few years off it's never to late to go back to school and that educating yourself further will never steer you wrong. With that being said this is my first semester of college and I'm very excited to finally do what I've put off. My brother recommended this class and it's a plus that it meets the requirements for transferring. I'm hoping to complete my general education and then transfer over to a university where I hope to further myself and receive my bachelors degree in biology. I'm hoping that after all my schooling is done I'll be able to work in the medical field.

  17. Introduction:
Hi guys! My name is Christine Croucher, but I prefer to go by Chrissy. I am going to be 18 on August 26th. I was one of the youngest people to graduate from my high school class. I worked at a shoe store called Journey's in Parkway Plaza for 6 months. But I am currently working for a school district here in San Diego. When I am not at school or work, I travel! I've been to various places across the States and Mexico. One of my most memorable trips was a cruise to Italy, Greece, and Turkey. In the future I hope to go adventure many more places across the globe.
    Educational Journey:
I attended high school all 4 years here in San Diego at Steele Canyon. I just recently graduated in June. Wohoo Class of 2015! I even graduated with honors which was a pleasant surprise. I choose to come to Cuyamaca because while completing my general education, I believed it would give me more time to decide which career path I want to pursue. Since I am so indecisive, I am taking this course hoping it will help give me ideas. Once I know what I plan on doing, I would like to move to Texas and continue on with my education out there.

Hey everyone!.. Well I will start off by saying that I was born and raised here in San Diego, I really love the weather out here. I am still 17..yeah I know I'm still a baby compared to you guys.. However, I turn 18 on September 6. My eyes change color i have thick long brown hair and I am Mexican, Arabic, Spanish, and Native American. I graduated this year from Chula Vista High School, I played varsity softball my first three years and I sort of got tired of it since I been playing ball since I was 11 so I ended up joining cross country my senior year. I am currently employed at Seaworld and I really like it here, it's a really fun and great way to gather all types of working experience for future jobs. On my free time ( which is really rare when I do because I'm either working or at the gym) I like to go out on hikes or to the beach and admire the beauty of nature and its peacefullness. Its a great stress reliever and it is super relaxing... I also love hearing music, taking my dogs out on walks, going out with friends and going shopping.

  20. Educational Journey:
As I mentioned earlier, I attended Chula Vista High School all four years. Just like Chrissy ^^^ I am one of the youngest students to graduate from class of 2015. I am taking this class honestly because I am required to but also because I know it will help me alot with my future plans and staying well organized with goals I am striving to achieve. I am also very indecisive with what kind of careers I could be in with what I like to do and what I want to study which is Physical Therapy ( sports medicine) which falls under the category of kinesiology. It would also be really awesome to be an athletic trainer, and i want to work as a personal trainer as a part time job or hobby. My current educational goal is to get as many classes as I can so I can finish quicker, pass all classes and transfer to either San Diego State or Long Beach, also strive for scholarships so I can get the opportunity to go out of state since I been here in San Diego since forever.

  21. HI I'm Nathan Carreno, I'm 18 years old and live here in sunny San Diego with my mom, two older brothers and two fluffy husky's and grateful to have lived here my whole life, i enjoy the simple things, I'm a very active person, i enjoy soccer but truly love running, i believe it has granted me many miracles such as a healthy life style, great friends, and almost 3 year relationship and a path to my future, which all happened because i didn't listen to my doctor 4 years ago who told me i couldn't do sports because of a slight heart condition. glad i didn't listen, so i take part in half marathons and everything below I'm unemployed so i like to think of myself as a full time runner, but its really taught me to be an appreciative an positive person and set me on achieving goals and a future dream job i hope to have one day.

Hi I'm Nathan Carreno, I recently graduated from El Cajon valley high school as part of the class of 2015, I was the 7th in my family to graduate from El Cajon Valley high school and most likely the last, in my time there i was part of
ASB, and varsity in cross country, soccer and track and field ^^ and as i said before i love running^^ and the people I met in my high school along with coaches and teachers put my mind on continuing my education towards teaching physical education and being a cross country coach for high school , as an active person i couldn't imagine myself ever working in an office only outdoors making a good experience for others the way they did for me in high school. Therefore i aim all my efforts towards that goal and have that dream job that might not making millions but I'd be happy with what i do and that's more than worth it for me.

I attended Grossmont High School from 2011 until my graduation in 2014. I've taken a year off school since then and am only now starting college courses. I'm still uncertain as to what I wish to become. I'm interested in Web Development (my current major) and Psychology, as well as Child Development. So we'll see where I end up. I'm hoping this class will help me with that and so much more I'm not a wonderful student, but I try my hardest and almost always pass. I hope to do better during college and start on a new me.

I am originally from Stockton California which is in the northern part of the state, about an hour south of the capitol. There isn't much to do in that town like there is to do here. I have many hobbies and i'm constantly taking on new task and trying new things so I keep myself pretty busy. Some of my hobbies and the things i'm passionate about are reading, writing, art, soap making, music, learning new things, and taking care of my home. I absolutely love taking care of my home. I also like to cook, I love trying new recipes and coming up with my own. I'd like to say i'm pretty good at coming up with new dishes, well most of the time. I love the new life my husband and I have created here.

  29. Hello, my name is Courtney, but people call me Kandiee as a nickname. I was born in San Diego but moved to Hawaii when I was eighteen months old, and moved back to San Diego when I was five years old. My dad was in the navy so I moved around a lot, living in a different home for two to three years at a time. I just recently graduated from Valhalla High School in June of this year. I am turning eighteen tomorrow, so yes that means that currently I am seventeen. I began drawing my freshmen year of high school and realized that I was pretty good at drawing fonts. So I began tracing designs, plants, settings, and even some animals. I am now able to free hand multiple pictures either from memory or looking at a picture. I have been working with kids since I was ten, because my mom runs a home day care and I am proud to say that I get to be a part of that everyday. My parents had separated when I was nine years old. I go back and forth between houses so I dont lose the relationships I have with them. The reason people call me Kandiee is because I used to sell it as a fundraiser to go to church camps. I decided I wanted to major in art because I find it quite amazing what you can do with a pencil and a piece of paper. My dream is to one day be recognized for my talent and maybe become famous for something I came up with.

I have been in dance classes since I was around the age of five, singing since I could talk, and was in cheer (competitive and high school) from second through my freshman year. I have always played around on instruments, such as the piano and guitar, but this semester I am actually taking a piano class. My goal is to become a music producer. I love spending time with family and friends, playing sports, and seeing new places. After I graduate, I hope to travel and maybe live in a few different states before settling down.

I stayed at Los Coches for sixth grade and half of seventh but decided to start home school for the second half of seventh. I did go back for eighth grade and promoted to high school. For ninth grade I went to Granite Hills, but the following summer decided El Capitan High School is where I wanted to be. I went to El Capitan for my sophomore year, homeschooled for the first half of Junior year, and then finished off my high school education at El Capitan High School. Now here I am at Cuyamaca where I hope to get my general education done as well as some classes to go towards my major and then transfer to a four year, such as CSU Long Beach or CSU Northridge. I am taking this course because it was highly recommended by multiple family members and I hope it helps me reach my goals.

I couldn’t finish because of the bad situation, after that we left Iraq. At the USA I’ve been three years, in this three years I evaluated my high school diploma and took some ESL classes. Then I went to Cuyamaca College and took regular English for two semesters. Also I had my typing certificate six months ago. Now I am taking BOT and math. I didn’t establish my goals exactly but I put BOT as a major because I liked and it Mach with my work so I could have more skills.I'm taking this class to approve my values , to establish my life goals , to have more information about the careers and finally i want to think the right way so i could approve my goals .

  35. Hi, it`s Courtney again, I realized that after I posted my first comment that I was supposed to put my educational goals on a separate one. My apologies for the confusion I may have caused. Well, as I had said before, I graduated from Valhalla High School with a diploma. After high school, the plan was to go to SDSU; however, I did not receive the grades good enough to get in. So, plan B was to go to Cuyamaca for two years to complete my general education and then transfer to SDSU with an Associates` and finish the courses needed to complete a Bachelors if not Masters in Studio Art.

  37. Hey everyone its me, Alex, again. My educational journey started off when I went to Little Country Christian Preschool as a kid. I started elementary school off at Conway Elementary School then I transferred to Bernardo Elementary School after second grade. Then for middle school I attended Heritage Digital Academy, where everything was done on a computer, which was very distracting. Then I attended Escondido Charter High School and I did pretty well. I was supposed to be going to Grand Canyon University this fall but I decided to do an internship with Indian Hills Camp instead, so I am obviously going to Cuyamaca.

  38. Hello everybody!
I'm Cielo. I am 22. Some of my interests are yoga, weight lifting and nutrition. I have a deep love for animals, and because of this I'm vegan. My vegan journey started when I was 13, with a few years in between of being vegetarian. My health is very important to me. I work out daily and also track my food/macro intake. I hope to one day own a vegan cafe with a yoga studio. One of the main activities I do is lift weights. I can currently bench my 50%, I’m working on benching my body weight. I’m hopefully going to start getting into Crossfit. I want to show people that you can still be strong without consuming animal products.

  39. Hello everyone, Cielo again!
Before attending Cuyamaca College, I attended Valhalla High School. I graduated in 2011. My job requires me to be enrolled in 12 units each semester and one of my literature classes was cancelled due to low enrollment. I was worried I wouldn’t be able to find a class that seemed interesting or that would fit into my schedule. Thankfully, I found this class. I chose it because it fit into my schedule and because it would help me. I have a lot of goals. I want to be able to help my family. I hope to teach English in a foreign country and own a yoga/vegan café. My current educational is to obtain my Bachelors degree in English Literature.

  40. Hello I’m Mirna Garcia. I have lived in San Diego my whole life and can’t imagine living anywhere else. I enjoy camping with friends, going to the beach with my dog, and visiting the snow in the winter so living in San Diego makes it convenient for me to enjoy doing all of my favorite things! I also enjoy cooking for friends and family and find it exciting to try new recipes and fulfilling to see the joy that comes with feeding the people most important to me. I have recently started to grow my own vegetables and plants from seeds and have found it extremely relaxing and counteracts the stresses that come with working full time and attending school.

  41. Hello, I’m Mirna Garcia and this is my educational history. After graduating Patrick Henry High School I attended Grossmont College but found that I hadn’t prepared myself to be successful and did not have the guidance or confidence to complete a degree program. After accepting a full time job I decided I would continue on the career path I was entering and left school. I now have the extreme desire and see the great importance of gaining a college education and feel this class will provide me the guidance and confidence needed to complete an associate’s degree for transfer to SDSU where I will then earn my bachelor’s degree. I am extremely excited to complete my first semester back to school and am eager to use the tools given to me in this class.

On 2009 I moved to Syria where I got my High School certificate as you call it in the U.S. It was hard for me when I first started because I had to study some materials in English like Math which was way different than the one I was taking in my country, but I passed it at the end. After that when I moved to the U.S. I attended a job training program that provides a High School Diploma within two years of training, I passed my Math CAHSEE from the first time, but I was struggling with an English exam, I passed it twice after that. On June 26th 2015 i graduated from High School with a Scholarship and that was the greatest thing in my graduation ceremony. This is my first semester at Cuyamaca college, I am working on my major classes. My major is computer engineering. I hope to accomplish what I want and become an engineer in the coming future.

Hello, my name is Jessica Estabrook. I am 34 and have been married for a little over 10 years. I have two daughters, the older will be starting kindergarten in a couple weeks and the younger one will start next year. I spend most of my time keeping the house in order and taking care of my girls. When they decide to let me have some time to myself (which is about as often as you see a unicorn) I love to read, learn, exercise and make DIY projects. In the past two years I learned to make my own peanut butter, chapstick, foot cream, our king size bed (it is mostly a stage, nothing fancy), and I propagated and kept a bunch of basil alive for 2 whole months before the heat beat me, just to name a few.

I grew up in central California in a town near San Luis Obispo. I attended UCSB and put off picking a major because I just loved learning things. Finally they told me I had to and I chose Psychology –it was what I was most interested in anyway- and then moved to San Diego to finish up my last year at UCSD. I also finished a couple of the GE’s I had put off doing at Mesa College. I received my B.A. in 2005 and proceeded focused on my family. Now with my children getting ready to start school over the next two years it was my turn to count again. I have been studying for the GRE (in my copious spare time) and will take it within the next year. I am taking this class because 10 years is a long time to be away from school and I have much more responsibility now than I did when working towards my bachelors. I feel I need all the help I can get. This time I want to learn the best and most efficient ways to meet my college and career goals. I hope to earn my Masters, and then my Ph.D. (provided I can figure out a way to earn money while earning my degree) in developmental psychology, neuroscience, adolescent counseling or school psychology. I am still narrowing it down and hopefully this class will help!

I am currently in a relationship with my high school sweetheart of 5 years. She is going to be a sophomore at San Diego State and we plan to move in together soon. Although this is my first semester of college, I hope that I can be successful and get used to the challenges college gives.

We moved to Sweden first then to the United States in 2006. I am majoring in business and administrations. My hobbies are playing guitar and making/producing music. I am also currently in a Metalcore band and we are working on recording our first offical album. Music has been a big/important part in my life and I feel energetic playing that type of music. Other hobbies of mine are hiking, going to the gym, and listening to music, a lot of music. I am also a big fan of soccer and I pretty much play that spurt everyday with a bunch of friends.

My educational journey start in El Cajon Valley High School when we first moved here to the united states, it was a really big change for me considering the type of education American schools provide and it was kind of hard to adapt to all that but day by day I learned how to speak more and more and started to make more friends and getting more comfortable with everything. After 4 great years of high school I moved to Gorssmount college and started my journey for a higher degree. I did end up changing my major a couple times because it was kind of hard for me to decide what to go with but I finally decided to move on with business and administration, because its something I enjoy learning about a lot. I'm currently working on getting my AA in this major and then transferring to SDSU to pursue a higher level of education and a higher degree. and I'm very excited for this semester and looking forward to have finish this year on a good note.

  67. As far as school is concerned, I graduated from Grossmont High School in January of 2004. I went on to try out some classes at Southwestern College and unfortunately didn't see them all the way through. I tried one more semester there but it only ended up the same way. At the time I was too concerned in partying and working. I eventually started school again in 2007 here at Cuyamaca College. I successfully finished about two-three semesters and then dropped out when I became pregnant with my oldest daughter in 2008. Looking back I wish I would've kept going, but everything happens for a reason. I started school again last semester with a vengeance. I took a class this summer and am continuing on here today. One thing I noticed is that the time I spent off was not really time wasted, but necessary time needed to collect myself and become focused on wanting to be in school. Being able to simply want an education and not just going mindlessly to get it done. I think it is unfortunate but necessary for me to take my lumps and realize that the past 11 years I've been out of school have been eye opening. I want to do better for myself and my family. My goal is to transfer from Cuyamaca to a four year school and receive a bachelor's degree. As of right now, I think I want to become a Chemical Engineer, but feel partially undecided. I have always been captivated with Engineering in general, not-to-mention I love math and science. I am very determined, and nothing will stop me now.

I am taking this class for myself so that I will start to be much more organized and will not procrastinate on completing work in this class and also other classes that I am taking. My goals for the future are to get my degree and a job in my degree and most importantly to make my family proud of my accomplishments.

  76. Hello, sorry I'm a tad bit late. My name is Jared Lichtenthaler and I graduated from Santana High school and I plan on pursuing Mechanical Engineering. I decided to follow this career pathway because back in my sophomore year, I landed an internship with a company called University Mechanical. I was the youngest person ever to get a job at this company, (I still hold that record), at the age of 15. Now I am 18 and my career with this company has taken off. I now work on a hospital down as UCSD that is currently undergoing construction. In order for this career to fully take flight I need to be in school and working towards a degree that will land me in a higher position. I love to fish, mainly salt water and my favorite type of fish to catch is yellow tail. I often find myself spending hours of my weekend catching up in a fun video game or meeting with my friends on an outing. I look forward to reading what people have to say and learning how to organize college better.
