Chapter 4, Exploring Interests and Values, Sept. 14-20

Hello Students,

For this week, choose any two topics below.
What is your most important value in life and how are you acting on this value to achieve your life goals?

Comment on a successful decision you have made and how it matches your values.

Comment on an unsuccessful decision you made and how it did not match your values.

What are your highest interests as described by the Interest Profiler in this chapter?  How do these interests match your career choice or the major you are considering?  Interests include realistic, investigative, artistic, social, enterprising and conventional.

Comment on another student's post. Can you add to their comment or raise new questions?

As one of your options this week, read the following 2 scenarios and comment on one of them. Based on the individual’s values, give your opinion about what would be the best decision.

Scenario 1: What should be my major?

Shawn is twenty years old and has completed two years of college. He has been trying to decide whether to major in engineering or music. He has completed all of his general education requirements as well as several courses in music, math, and physics. As a child, Shawn was interested in science and dreamed of making new inventions. He always took things apart to see how they worked. Math was always easy for Shawn, and he received awards for achievement in science. He also took part in band throughout his school years and learned to play several instruments. As a teenager, he had a garage band and became so interested in playing the piano that he spent two hours a day practicing. Shawn’s dilemma was that he was becoming stressed out trying to do both majors and
no longer had time to do well in both music and engineering. He also wanted to have time to get a part-time job in order to become more independent. Shawn’s top five values are being independent and living on his own, having a secure future, doing interesting work, achieving something important, and being able to relax. Based on his values, what major should Shawn choose?

Scenario 2: Should Maria continue her education?

Maria is a married mother of two young boys ages five and seven and a part-time college student. Maria and her husband, Juan, are very proud of their Mexican heritage and value their marriage and family. They both think that it is important for Maria to spend time with the children. Maria learned to speak English as a second language and has made sure that her children speak both English and Spanish. While the children are in school, Maria has been attending college part-time with the goal of becoming a teacher’s aide in a class for bilingual children. She has some experience as a teacher’s aide and gets a great deal of satisfaction from helping the children. Juan works in construction, and the family has sacrificed to come up with the money to pay for Maria to attend college. Maria has struggled to earn her associate’s degree and is proud of her accomplishments. She values her education and wants her children to do well in school. Now Maria is considering continuing her education to earn the bachelor’s degree so that she can become a teacher. She would enjoy having her own classroom, loves working with children, and would have a higher income as a teacher than she would as a teacher’s aide. Maria’s husband is concerned that she will spend too much time at college and will not be home for the children. He is also relieved that Maria has finished college and plans to work part-time to supplement the family income while the children are in school. Should Maria continue her education and earn a bachelor’s degree?

  1. I'm choosing to write what Shawn should major in. My opinion is that he should major in engineering. The reason for this is because he will be able to accomplish everything he said he values such as; being independent, wants to live on his own, have a secure future, doing intresting work, etc. In order to accomplish this he will need to have a stable job in which engineering will be able to fullfill all of his needs and values. Also, he did say he liked math and said it was an easy subject. I believe that music can get you far but not as far as engineering because there are so many things you can do with engineering. Also, if Shawn really wants to do music is he always minor in it and major in engineering. It is two different things but he can always make time for it later in life. I believe Shawn should major in engineering because he will be able to accomplish all of the goals he sets.

    1. Kelly,

Engineering has amazing benefits to it. You chose a great major for Shawn. I think Engineers can never go wrong. Especially the fact that he is very good in math and likes science as well. Maybe he can also look into Computer Engineer. It won't be that difficult for him compared to other students.

    2. kelly, i agree with you that he should major in engineering because of all the benefits engineering has that will help shawn accomplish all his goals. and especially since he's very interested in inventing new things and also has a talent in math and physics.

    3. Hey Kelly,
I totally agree with your points regarding Shawn major. I think you have shared a good points regarding his major. I agree that engineering has lot of benefits and it is a good major. Also, as you said, in order to accomplish this “he will need to have a stable job in which engineering will be able to fulfill all of his needs” you right on that because engineering can open lots of doors in his future.
On the other hand, if I asked you, What is the right major if you do not want to deal with math or science or prehab’s little of math is ok.

    4. This was actually the choice that my son had to make in college. He is now a successful engineer and doing extremely well. He still loves music and does it as a hobby.

  2. Scenario 2: Should Maria continue her education?

I think Maria should definitely continue her education. She is on the right path to succeed and make a better lifestyle not only for herself but for her husband and children as well. She will connect with her kids even more by becoming a teacher. She values her education and wants the best for her kids. Sometimes individuals have to sacrifice a bit of time to make a better future for there kids. If she only becomes a teachers aide, then she obviously won't make as much as a teacher. It will also allow her to have holidays off as well as her children so she can spend time with them the same days they are off. Her passion for teaching will make her more motivated to go to work everyday and look forward to going home and spending time with her family and kids.

  4. Scenario 2: Should Maria continue her education?

After reading a little bit about Maria, I think she should definitely continue her education! I think that Maria will be a great role model for her children as well if she does so. It may be hard but worth it at the end. I think that Maria has already come so far and it will only help her to continue! After all of her schooling is done, she will be able to help out the family so much more than she is now. It is hard thinking that she won't spend as much time with them but in the end she will be able to provide so much more for them in the future if she does this for herself. Working part-time won't be so bad either she will be able to make time for her famly. Also the fact that she's been wanting this should be a reason that she should go after it. Nothing is worse than living your life thinking " What if I had" or "I should of".

  5. Scenario 2: Should Maria continue her education?

After reading about Maria, I think she should stay in school and get her degree. The degree would allow her to make more money and would educate herself more. I think she has already come a long way and it would be better for her to get her bachelor degree. Making more money is always better. I also think she will have time to be with her family as well.

True that after getting her degree she will be making more money but at the same time she will need to over-come the challenges that will face her during school. Its not always so easy to become what you want but i think maria can do it and get her degree as well as spend as much time as she wants with her family.

  6. What is your most important value in life and how are you acting on this value to achieve your life goals?

My most important value in life is happiness. I don't like being stressed out or doing things I don't enjoy. So I am making sure to do achieve my goals. I am going to college and I am taking classes that I am interested in so that I can figure out what my major will be. I am spending time with people that I love and with whom I closest to. I may not be at a job right now that I like but I am getting money so that I can do things I love. By doing all of these things, I am enjoying life and I am happy.

    1. I agree with you, happiness is the best part of our lives, when we love what we do, we feel so happy. If we get stressed sometimes, we give up right away and we don't like to continue, but when we try again and make our selves happy, we enjoy what we are doing and we would like to do more. for me, sometimes I don't like to study because I don't understand what I am reading, but when I look for my answers , I feel so happy to continue and have more things to do so I understand the material better and do better in the class. Life's base is, if we make ourselves happy, we can love what is around us.

      Delete
    2. I am hoping that students think about what makes them happy while reading the material for this course. The last chapter focuses on what psychologists say about how to be happy in life. The key is finding out what you do best and doing it.

  8. Scenario 2: Should Maria continue her education?

After reading Scenario 2, I believe that Maria should continue her education so that she can earn her bachelor's degree. Though it will cost more to do this, it will be worth it in the end because she can earn more money for her and her family and she can move up in her career. Maria's husband thinks that she won't have enough time to spend time with her family but she already went to school while the kids were in school so it won't be a problem. She can just schedule the college classes around the time her children go to school.

    1. Yes, sometimes students have to go to school part time, but you eventually reach your goals. It is so much better than giving up on your goals.

  9. Scenario 2: should Maria continue her education?

Maria has already worked hard for her accomplishments, although it has put her family in tight financial situations, she means well by her doings, I believe that Maria should most definitely pursue her bachelor degree, she has her family in mind as her motivation and if she earns the degree she'll be able to get a job she is happy with and that pays good , and once she has that , all the hard times pay off and she and her family can look forward to the good times ahead of them.

  10. i will be writing about what shawn should be majoring in. i believe that he should major in engineering because based on what i read, he got a very unique talent that he could turn it into something very rewarding. engineering is a very great path that he could accomplish all his dreams and goals through it. music is not a bad major, but for shawn, he seems to have a skill that not alot of people have. so he should use that advantage to build a great career.

  11. Before I write about Shawn and his Major, please allow me to share some definitions about values and why it’s impotent in our lives. you do not have to read it or comment on it. Its just extra Information
The definition should reference to the meaning of values which is derived from the value of any precious thing...
Values are stations, levels, and indicators of control by the ideas, people, objects, actions, themes, trends, tendencies, ambitions, practical behavior, individual and collective attitudes in terms of gracious and value.
Values have benefits in an individual's life, including:
    1) It is form our personality balanced strong cohesive, because it is going according to the principles of fixed and values, as they unite itself, and strengthen his control, and regulate the elements, through the consolidation of its destination, we believe the person is moral wobbling fragmented self, haunted by a lot of psychological conflicts, God says “Is he who walks a dumping ground on his face gave the security of walking together on a straight path”
    2) They make human lives better; value and status and prestige among the people, and as far as these values increase people's confidence in him and their dependence upon, and racing in assigned duties and functions, God says, “Each degrees, which have served and your Lord is unaware of what work”
    3) The application of values in a person's life that they make a lasting sense of satisfaction and confidence and happiness, also make it a distinct skin, patience and self-confidence, and strength of will, and to avoid the manifestations of frustration and boredom and dissatisfaction and indignation of the conditions of all.

In my opinion, Shawn should major in engineering. I think this is the best for him, and there are many reasons why this major will fit his personality and his interests. The first reason, being engineering is little hard then other majors, however, it has many benefits in the future regarding the social level, money, honoring the family, and doing something for the community. Shawn should major in engineering because he does not struggle in Math or science, therefore, this will be an easy major for him. Second reason, as Shawn growing up, he was very interesting in science and had a dream of making new discoveries in his life; therefore, all of these factors are positives and motivations. If he attend the engineering school, he will like it so much and he increase his value towards work and future.

  12. Comment on a successful decision you have made and how it matches your values.

The most successful decision I have ever made, was the decision to work at Indian Hills camp over the summer. This matches my values because I am a Christian and Indian Hills is a Christian Camp. This summer I got the opportunity to be a counselor for two weeks, and I got to share my faith with junior high girls that haven’t had the same opportunities that I have had. Then the second week that I was a counselor, I got to share my faith with Angel Tree girls, and that was the most successful thing I have ever done because I loved those girls more than anything and being able to share Jesus with them for a whole week was just amazing.

Comment on an unsuccessful decision you made and how it did not match your values.

I think the most unsuccessful decision I have ever made was to try and fix things. This does not match my values because I am not a builder or a fixer person. I like to help people but not necessarily fix things because I honestly just end up making it worse or someone has to re-do it once I think that I am finished with it. One time over this past year when I was in Mexico at an orphanage, I tried fixing this little boy’s bike because the chain came off and he couldn’t pedal the bike. So I tried to help him by putting the chain back on because, how hard can it be right? No wrong, I think that was one of the hardest things because I could not figure it out, so I finally had to get someone to come over and do it for me, which was just not fun.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Thanks for sharing your successes as well as when things did not work out as planned. We are generally successful when our actions are based on personal values. As far as fixing things, you can learn with experience. I was once on a bike trip and my chain broke and I was far away from any help. I had to convince myself that I could fix the chain and after a few trials and errors, I was able to get the chain back on the bike.

  13. I think Maria has already worked really hard to accomplish everything she already has and has still attended school even though she had two children and has a husband. Her husband supports her as well so I say she should go on and continue her schooling and she will be so proud to be successful in everything she has wanted to do and it ill set an amazing example for her kids and it will show that if you really want something and you try really hard to get there then you will accomplish anything you set your heart to.

  15. My most important value in life is finding a good career that fits my skills and my interests. I am going to school and taking some classes for my Nursing major which I am super interested in. I always loved to work in a hospital or a clinic with patients, so I am doing my best to finish school sooner as well to have an associate degree in nursing from Grossmont college. All I hope is to be a nurse and have this job for the rest of my life. Once I get this job, I will have achieved my most important goal in my life.

  16. Regarding Shawn's values, I would recommend him to major in engineering for many reasons; engineering has a good future and provides good careers that would make Shawn have an independent life and a secure future as well. Also, engineering is one of the majors that make people proud, confident, and have a self-esteem, so in my opinion having a degree in this major is really more important than being a singer or an instrument player. However, this job may not give people relax in the beginning because it needs a lot of hard work but the end can be different and can change people's life to better. Finally, engineering is best and Shawn still can play music as one of his interesting hobbies.

  17. What is your most important value in life and how are you acting on this value to achieve your life goals?

My most important value in life is loving what I was dreaming of. I would like to get my degree in the major that I am studying and find the job that best fits my skills and my interests, but loving what I do is important for me because if I do something I don't like, I will not be able to success. I always do my work with love. According to what I have learned from this course, I found that everything good we do, we get it back in the future, we always learn from our experience even if we are struggling with something, there is no chance to fail, but there is always chance to succeed. If we have confidence in our selves, we can change the world not only our lives to a beautiful place.

Scenario 1: What should be my major?

In my opinion, Shawn should major in engineering for many reasons. I know he wants to be more independent, but I always consider music as a hobby not as a major. Engineering is a huge world, and it has a lot of opportunities for him. He can major in somethings he would love most and be creative in it. It might be hard at the beginning because he has to work a lot, but he will find that this major is better for him at the end. He will find that his degree in engineering will make him successful in his life. Also, if he would like to enjoy playing instruments, he can do that as a hobby, this will make him confident and happy about his life.

  18. Comment on a successful decision you have made and how it matches your values.

A successful decision that I have made was to go to a community college instead of a university. The reason for is because I really needed extra time to get my personal things together. For example, I had time to get a job, work for a while and save up money. I also have time to get my liscence and get a better job. This is bearly my first semester and I notice that one really does save a lot of money. I would be wasting three times more I am on my classes at a university than here at a community college. I am really happy with this decision that I have made.

    1. Hello Viviana! I agree with your decision completely! I had the same issue of choosing to go to community college first or go straight into a four-year university. You would not believe the pressure I would get from family members to go straight to a four-year. “You’re so smart you will fit right in!” and “You’ll do great there!” were some of the things they would say to me. Little did they know, I was the one paying for my education, with no financial aid from government funding or my parents. I am currently trying to find a better job that will pay more to help get me through community college, but it is so difficult for me to find time! Sooner or later, I will just have to make time for it and eventually things will unfold how they are meant to. I am proud of your decision and I wish you the best of luck on your educational journey.

    2. I think that community college is a wise decision as long as you know your goal and plan your courses correctly. In the end, your bachelors degree will not be from a community college and you will have saved almost half the cost. My own children took advantage of Cuyamaca and then transferred on to SDSU and UCSD for their degrees.

  19. Hello everyone,
The most important value in my life in being honest. Honest with myself as well as others. Being honest with myself allows me the ability to love and value myself and give me so much confident to achieve my goals in the most true way possible. Being honest to others allows others people to trust me and always come to me first when they are in need as well as in their tough times. When others trust me because of honest I am, It makes me feel better about myself and value myself more and more as a good person. This value will also help me in my future career because it will make my coworkers trust me and come to me when they struggle.

A very successful decision I made is by deciding to major in business administration. I by being honest to myself and finding where my strengths and downsides are had help me the most. Being honest to myself and knowing that I hate CIS and have a weird obsession to math and not being ashamed of it had help me, and I sure cannot wait until I reach my goals as being a business woman and reach the future I am wishing for the most. This decision saved me so much time because I will stick with it and I won’t waste any years deciding the major I want to do and I love to do.

  21. My most important value in life is happiness. You get so much more out of being happy, than out of anything else. I work better at things when i'm happy, I do more things when i am happy, i'm just better when i am happy. To me its just not living a good life if you aren't happy. If I am happy with what i'm doing then i am more likely to be successful because I enjoy doing it. I chose goals that I am happy about and or that will make me happy, then I have a more positive attitude towards everything I do.

I have better school opportunity, better work opportunity, and more things here to do than where I'm from. Where I'm from we had three different small colleges, and two of them are for very specific things. It was also impossible to find a job there. My home town is small, boring and dangerous. Artistic interests deals with identifying forms and patterns. Realistic interests are applied learning practices and deal with real world problems. I wanted to go into the field of botany and botanical research and that career path matches up with my interests pretty well. I will be in a lab studying how these plants interact in the natural world, finding patterns and connecting them in a hands-on type of way. Being happy does not come easy to some people and when people find happiness they try to stick with whatever is making them happy. I love how you mentioned that happiness is a value in your life. In my opinion I believe Maria should continue her education. As mentioned, she does not get much out of her being a teachers aide. Instead of her wasting her time on being out at that job, she should invest that time in going to school to get her bachelors degree. The reason for is because later when she successfully obtains her degree she will get a better paying job such as being a teacher. She will have way much more for her self and her family and they will not be struggling as much. Even if she had stayed with that low paying job, sooner or later she will want to do something about it. Just how the saying goes ..." Better late than never"

  29. What is your most important value in life and how are you acting on this value to achieve your life goals?

Having financial security is one of my most important values. Throughout our lives, anything can happen at any time, and feeling that security helps make things easier. I want to live a happy, comfortable life, and start a family some day. When I have kids, I want them to be able to have everything they need and I want them to be able to someday follow their dreams and go to college with the support from their parents just as I have. I believe that Maria should continue her educational career. In the end, she will be making more money which will allow her and her husband to be able to put their children through college more easily. Also, if Maria wants to complete her educational career, she should follow her dreams and achieve her goals. Sacrificing some time from her kids is a con, but it will make things a lot easier for her family in the end. Also, she values her education and she wants to someday be able to support her children through their educational journey, which is why completing school and becoming a teacher will be more of a positive outcome.

My top values are financial stability, a sense of accomplishment and being an educated person. By enrolling in college I am able to uphold and live true to all of these values. By completing my education if have a better chance of obtaining a job that pays well and is steady, I will feel accomplished and know that I have done something better for my life, and finally I am able to become a better educated person by learning new subjects and I have already learned so much just in my first semester back.

  33. Perhaps this doesn't fit the definition of engineering, but why doesn't Shawn become a sound engineer? Then he could do both things he likes as well as make enough money to be independent. According to Wikipedia the job of a sound engineer is also called an acoustical engineer and it "concerns the creative and practical aspects of sounds including speech and music, as well as the development of new audio technologies and advancing scientific understanding of audible sound." It seems to me that this career would perfectly fit Shawn and his talents, interests and values. He should be able to get a good job, which should give him enough time to relax, and have satisfying and interesting work. Why compromise or give up something you love when you could find a win-win?

  35. In regards to Maria, I think that if she wants to ever achieve the goal of self-actualization then she would have to earn her bachelors degree. There are scholarships and grants for mothers out there. There is financial aid which are some of the best loans you can get. She doesn't have to go to school full time she could go part time. She could do some online courses. It just seems that sacrificing lower income for two or three years in order to have 20-40 years of higher income is worth it. In regards to her children. If they are both in school she would have some more time to do her classes. If she works out a schedule then she might be able to get her school work and part time job accomplished while they are in school. I know it's hard because only one of my kids is in school full time and I thought I would have more time but I do not. However, I have been working on using my time more wisely and it has paid off in terms of having more free time after I have accomplished what I needed to do for school. I don't think Maria should give up on her dream.

  36. In response to Shawn and his decision, I believe he should pursue Engineering over music. Shawn and I share similar child hoods, I always wanted to take apart things and put them back together such as Shawn did. Shawn should pursue Engineering over music because it is easier to get a more stable job in Engineering than it is in Music. In music, if you can make it, then you can be successful and blow up, however that type of success is rare. In Engineering, he would have time to relax and also move out on his own and he could do music on the side.

I once made the decision to buy a sweater. I walked into H and M at the mall, and approached the clothing rack attached to the wall. I cycled through the clothes with my girlfriend and a few shirts and sweaters stood out, but one sweater really stood out to us. Something about the way this sweater was designed just made me smile. It was a black sweater with a soft interior and an intricate design of a picture of Arizona on the outside of it. I liked the sweater, so I bought it. Best decision ever.

  37. What is your most important value in life and how are you acting on this value to achieve your life goals?

My most important value is being a good person to everyone.i think that everyone should value on this but it all depends on the person's opinion. I intend to act on this value by helping other people, giving more than receiving more. In this world, if we don't help one another, it will continue to be corrupt. I think that showing others what a good person i am and helping others might influence them to do the same. Help those in need and teach others that it's not all about receiving, its more about giving and showing others that you care about a change. This will help me achieve my goals because as I’m majoring in criminal justice to become a police officer, it's more about helping and protecting the community. I think this is a big thing in my life.

I went to an orthopedic doctor a week after and they told me it is in fact broken and i would need some sort of support for my wrist for at least 3 weeks. They gave me an option surprisingly of a brace or a cast. My choice was a brace and i should have got a cast. It would have been more support and would cause me less pain.

  39. What is your most important value in life and how are you acting on this value to achieve your life goals?

My most important value in life is being happy. I feel that you may have everything you ever wanted but still be sad, and you may have very little but be happy. It is all about your outlook on life and one of my most important values is trying my best on improving mine. I hope to do this by staying positive and making decisions that make me happy. I also want to make decisions that make me happy and want to pursue things that I love. This value of happiness will help me enjoy life more and appreciate what comes my way.

  40. Scenario 2: Should Maria continue her education?

After reading Maria's problem, she should stay in college and get her degree. I think Maria should continue her educational journey and continue going to college. In the long run, this will definitely pay off. It will help make her more financially secure and set her career up for the better. If not, she will regret it and might have wished she continued school. It is better to continue working on her goals instead of giving up on them and regretting it for the rest of her life. I also believe she will still be able to make time for her family.

The decisions are critical because some led me the complete wrong way of which i want to go. It's difficult for me to make the right decision because of my indecisiveness and because i don't know which is better for my future. I still need help with the aspect for my life.

  42. What is your most important value in life and how are you acting on this value to achieve your life goals?

The most important value in my life is to be happy. I believe that nothing is more important than happiness. Being close with your family, doing well in school, achieving the dreams in which you have longed to achieve, and also enjoying your career. If we are happy we tend to feel more compassionate and feel healthier both physically and emotionally. Being happy also attracts good people to come into our lives which can even result in building stable relationships with those people. Being happy will not only benefit you but also others around you. It is almost like a domino effect!

  43. I believe that Maria should continue going to college and earn her degree. In my opinion, if she does not do so she might regret it and always think about all the "what ifs." I think that if Maria became a teacher it would make her happy and that is the most important value for someone to have in life. Maria simply needs to make sure to balance her time so that she has some down time for herself and also has time to spend with her husband and children. I think she will be very happy being a teacher and should not give up on her goals and dreams of becoming one.

  44. I think that Maria should definitely continue to attend school. Although it is difficult for her and husband to come up with the money for her. I believe that if there is a will there is a way. Today there are scholarships for mothers that are going back to school. Also, after she has graduated, she will be making more than what she makes currently. This will help her husband, her children, as well as herself. Additionally, this gives her children an example to follow and makes her an excellent role model for her children. Her children will never forget that it doesn't matter how old they are, they are not too old for school, and nothing can get in the way of an education.

  45. A successful decision that I have made is moving out and taking responsibility of my life. This caused me to realize that although I might have been a responsible person there was way more that I needed to learn. I got a job, and that also helped. Attendance was something that I was not really concerned about. In the last month, my job has taught me that I have to be earlier than expected to wherever I may need to be. In conclusion, I think that moving out and getting a job was definitely a step to help me become more successful.

  46. What is your most important value in life and how are you acting on this value to achieve your life goals?

To me the most important value is being honest and loyal to the people you work and live with. Nothing can reflect your personality to other people other than being honest and loyal. I choose this from personal experience and throughout the many years at work and school and from meeting people from all over the globe. One of the things that people value other people by the most is through honesty. I act on this value in every day of my life and it definitely helps me to achieve my goals and make me successful.

  47. Scenario 1: What should be my major?

To me I think Shawn should major in engineering, not saying that there is not a good future from a music side but since he is very good at math and had an interest in science, that would be a great major for him and engineering always promises a great future and provides a good income as well. with that being said, music is something you can always focus on during a free time, for example, I major in business currently but I also play music during my free time and practice with my band. To me I look at what's more important to me and use the other stuff as a hobby.

  48. My most important value in life is my own health and the health of the people I hold close to myself. It should not be all about the money, the looks, or your position in the social world, as long as you are living a healthy life and able to wake up every morning, you should be thankful. When people start to worry more about the money is when they usually start living an unhealthy life, leading them onto the wrong track. By thinking about these irrelevant things, it takes you away from achieving goals that you have set in the past.

Since she is a mother of two young boys, they will have to learn how to help themselves when their mom is at work, but she would also be setting a great example for her kids by going to school. If she is able to achieve her goals of being a teacher, not only will it benefit her family by having that income, but she will be benefiting her children who most likely need help with homework, and now Maria can help her children when they need help in school.

  50. A successful decision I made was taking responsibility for my actions and accepting the consequences that followed. This allowed me to mature more mentally and physically, as well as become the role model for my little sisters. By taking responsibility for what I did, I then learn how to talk about a problem and work it out. Other times, if I don't bring it up then it doesn't get solved. However, I have been getting better grades in school because I have been taking responsibility for my actions and realizing them ahead of time.

  51. A successful decision I have made would be staying at home with my kids during the week and working on the weekend. The decision matches my values because I am putting my children first. An unsuccessful decision I have made would be buying my first car. It was ten years ago and instead of buying a car that was sensible and affordable, I decided to go with expensive and large. Everything eventually went downhill. It was a huge burden financially; a very regretful decision. At that time I was't even aware of what my value's were, so that is probably why nothing really went well with that decision. ~According to the interest profiler I scored highest in investigative, next was realistic, and artistic. This actually aligns with a couple of engineering areas that I have considered, so it seems to me that I am on the going down the right path.

I actually think about this constantly and plan to re-evaluate the things that I do and say to make sure that I am being the best parent that I can be. I plan on trying to provide a better life for my children, hence one of the main reasons why I am back in school, so that I can give them the things that they need and be able to afford the things that they want.

I was faced with the reality that I may not graduate if i didn't finish a course needed in order to graduate. I of course procrastinated and pushed it off until the last minute. I thankfully finished it in time, however, I didn't do as well of a job on it as would have liked. Sadly, I can't change that now. All I can do is look to the future and pray that the best is what I see.

  53. My most important value is to be happy. It is my life and I am the one in control of it. I have no one else to blame but myself if I am not content with my lifestyle. If I want something, I must set my mind to it and achieve it. Not everything in life with come easy, but it will with hard work. I do not want to be dependent upon others for any reason what so ever. I believe that by helping others and as well as accomplishing my personal goals in life, I will be able to maintain my value.

Not only will she achieve her dream of becoming a teacher, but it would benefit her whole family. They would no longer be dependent on just her husband’s income because she would be able to add to it. In addition, Maria would also be a great role model to her sons by showing them her dedication in following her goals. Overall, her husband should be more supportive in what she wants to do with her life.

  54. In scenario 2, I would encourage Maria to work towards her goal. I myself am in a similar situation and know what it's like to feel a longing to be and do more. I think that she could re-assess her day to day activities to make sure she gives her husband and kids enough time while also being able to focus on herself, and her family will support her regardless (I'm sure). A big benefit to this is that her kids will notice how hard she is working and possibly strive to do the same. Obviously she should only do as much or take as many units as makes sense to be able to keep balance with her values, but I think it is important not to over look the things that we want out of life as well.

  56. One of the most important value is to have fun and live life. Because like I mentioned on collegescope, no matter how successful or unsuccessful you become in life, we are all eventually going to the same place. So you have to have fun in order to live a good life. If you're always stressing, always worrying about the little things, hating people, making negative thoughts you're not going to live a fun life. You're not living life the right way. So live free make your own positive choices to have a fun life. Live life to the fullest and never worry about what the person next to you has to say about you.

My highest interest includes being social. I love communicating with others and learning things from others. My career includes being a dental hygienist. That's when social comes in. Being social in this career will help me communicate with others and learn things from others. Also, ill be able to help others and to help my community. I believe that being social helps us connect with people and become more open about us and who we are. We learn from others and becoming social and that's one thing that I strongly believe about this interest.

A successful decision that I have made is changing my major. I wanted to become a dentist or a pharmacist, but I slowly started to realize that it just was not meant for me. I feel like I only cared for those career paths in order to make money. Now I know that it is important for me to do something that I have a passion for and something that I'm talented in. That's is when I started to looking more into the computer science path. I work well with computers and I know I win have a ton of fun learning more. Now there is more value to what it is I do, because I have a passion for it.

Comment on an unsuccessful decision you made and how it did not match your values.

An unsuccessful decision that I've made is not trying hard enough to get into a higher math class in order to transfer quicker. If I do not successfully get into a math class for any reason, I will need to spend an extra year at community college. My major highly depends on math classes, and it is better to finish them before transferring.
