Chapter 3, Learning Style and Intelligence, Sept. 7-13

Chapter 3, Learning Style and Intelligence

Remember to make 2 postings of at least 100 words each this week.  Choose any 2 of the topics below for your postings this week.

1.  What is your ideal environment for learning?  What study strategies work best for you?

2.  What are your highest multiple intelligences and what careers do they suggest?

3.  Write about your experiences in college so far.  Have you been able to apply anything learned in this class?

Apply what you have learned so far in this course (motivation, personality type, learning style, multiple intelligences) by commenting on any of these scenarios:

4. You have just been assigned a 10 page term paper.

5. You have to study for a challenging math test.

6. You have to write up a lab report for a biology class. It includes drawing of a frog you have just dissected.

7. You are taking a required course for your major and it is taught by only one professor. You dislike this professor.

8. You are taking a business class and have been assigned a group project to design a small business. It is worth 50% of your grade. One of the group members wants to control the group and the others seem to be rebelling.

9. You have signed up for an economics course and find it difficult to stay awake during the lecture.

10. You signed up for a philosophy course to meet a humanities requirement. The vocabulary in the course is unfamiliar.

11. As part of the final exam, you have to prepare a five minute presentation for your art history class.

  1. 3. Write about your experiences in college so far. Have you been able to apply anything learned in this class?
    - Hi class, I chose number 3 because I wanted to tell you guys how my college experience is going so far. My college experience is amazing so far, I feel as though i have not procastated and I feel very productive. Those of you who don't know I am on the volleyball team at Cuyamaca and I am having a blast in college. I will be graduating next semester which I am very happy about because I can finally dorm and live that dorm life. I have been able to apply this class with other class by motivating myself to study, turn in homework on time, and motivating myself in general. The next number I chose is number 1.

    1. What is your ideal environment for learning? What study strategies work best for you?
-My ideal enviroment for learning would probably be somewhere quiet. I cannot be at my house because I feel as though I get distracted. I believe that if I am in a group and we are all studying or learning as a whole I could get something out of that. Some study stratagies that work for me is always study before a test, or practice them until I understand it. For my math class I would constantly do problems over and over to help me rememeber which step goes first, second, and last.

Chapter: 3 – learning style and Intelligence- Results

This is one of the most important chapter to all of us because it has the most effective learning strategy. First, be honest about the answers because the questions will determine our learning style. Therefore, it will depend on your answers. This specific chapter, it covers visual learning techniques, auditory learning techniques, and Kinesthetic and tactical techniques. Also, it will cover learning style and multiple intelligence. It has great’s points, therefore, pay close attention to gain all information. In addition, it will discuss self- awareness, motivation, and developing new skills.
First, I do have lot of experience in college becuase I have attended many universities worldwide. My study time was beautiful because I had a goal to reach, but I could not reached it because I had to leave the country; therefore, I am here studying again.
Second, my ideal environment for learning is when the sun down, or afternoon. Also, the strategies I use for my learning is ask question, skim the page, and discus with others.
Third, my highest multiple intelligence is motivation and self- awareness. My career that I suggest as of now is studying law enforcement.
Third, I have learning new experiences from this chapter; I like to study in light environment, and over here, there is no light at the most of the time; therefore, I learning to use the sun light or sit when there is a light, or maybe next to the windows.

Also, I will apply these points toward my education.
Self-awareness, I will try to be aware and control my emotion toward the study. I will not stop till I get the job done. Motivation, I consider myself as motivator. I focus on my school and my homework because I know this is all for me. If I get a degree, it will benefit me not benefit the others; therefore, I will have a higher self-motivation. To develop my interpersonal skills I will try to be more empathetic, and use my social skills to gain better report with people. Therefore, I will discuss the topic that I am working on, or ask questions and get help from other students. I will have to regulate myself and my time as well; I will develop a new habit of not go out and stay home and finish my homework. Social skills, I am willing to learn from others and teach the others if they do not know how to answer to the questions.
Finally, no matter how hard you instructor, I will not blame him/her If I get lower grade, I will blame myself for not studying harder. If I assigned with group to design a project, if I see one of the group member wants to control the group and the others, I will either talk to him/her or explain that we are all group; your thought and my thought can make big different. Also, if I got an philosophy class and got hard words( which I always find hard words because I come from a country who speaks different language) I have my hand book dictionary, and sometimes I use google translator.
Overall, chapter 3 has a great learning techniques. Every one of us has his/her own way of learning; however, this chapter can help you discover new way of learning.

    1. Ammar, you are truly motivated and it's very nice to see that in you. You are a smart individual who has high set goals. You seem to be very hard working and you mentioned that you are taking a hard class but you are prepared for it by looking up the words you are not aware of. Good for you. I wish you the best. I am sure you will succeed in life.

    2. Hello Heve,
My name is Aladdin, but this is my brother account. Also, thank you so much for your comments. Likewise, you have great personality and I can see you it in your writing. You have used ethos writing which generally means you are an emotional girl, and that is great. Also, I am kind of like your style, I like to study when it’s quite, but it’s really hard over here. However, likewise you do, I listen to music it helps to ignore the outside voice. Good luck in your life, and I hope you do well in this semester. I am willing to read your comments in the upcoming chapters.

    3. Hey Ammar, I love that motivation you have, keep up the good work and you will be really successful. I hope your car does not become an issue anymore. I believe everything will work out great for you as long as you are tying really hard in school.

      My respect to you.

    4. Aladdin, you are probably one of the most motivated students I have ever had. When your education was interrupted by leaving your country, you could have given up, but you chose to keep going in another country. This is awesome! Keep up the good work.

  3. 1. What is your ideal environment for learning? What study strategies work best for you?
When I read this question, my ideal environment to work in would be quiet. I have trouble concentrating if it is really noisy and loud. I can take in what I am reading or doing if it is quiet. I also believe that I learn more when I work alone or when I am with a small group. When I work in groups I like everyone to be focused on what we are learning. It's harder for me to learn when people in my group are not taking anything seriously.

    9. You have signed up for an economics course and find it difficult to stay awake during the lecture.
If I decided to take an economics course and I had trouble staying awake, I think that I would start eating before class. I believe that if I have food before class then I will be more energized and awake. Especially if I eat a healthy meal. Water is also good to drink before and during class (if it's allowed). If this course starts early in the morning then I would make sure to wake up 2 hours before so that I could be more awake and have time to get ready. The main thing I am saying here is to eat and drink before so that I will be energized and more focused.

    1. You have some good ideas for preparing for your economics class. Another idea is to read or at least skim over the chapter to be covered in class so you are familiar with the material. This will make it more interesting and meaningful.

  4. 1. What is your ideal environment for learning? What study strategies work best for you?

Right now I take classes online so anywhere I can get comfortable in my home is ideal. Its pretty similar though with a classroom. I prefer working a cool environment, I can't get comfortable in the heat. I also prefer a clean space. The cleaner it is the better I can work. A mess will distract me. When i'm at home I like to listen to music when I work. I also like to sit somewhere where I can move freely. I like to move around when working. I like to have a snack and something to drink as well. I also like to read out loud, it helps me focus better, because then I am actually reading the material and I know i'm not just staring at it blankly. As long as i'm comfortable i'm happy learning.

    1. Hi Erica,
This is my first time taking online classes, and I agree with you regards the environment. Sometimes, Its really hard to get to the class at the right time especially for me because my old car had issues. Also, you right you can do much at home and the time are fair. One thing I did not like about the online classes is you have to choose the right instructor. Because some of them, never responds, or they take tow or maybe three weeks to respond. However, Ms Marsha different, she always respond and she always email us with Important assignments.

    2. Hey Erica, I also am just taking online classes too. I agree about working in the heat I have to be cool at all times before I start to work. You are also right about working in a clean place. Eating is a big part before studying and doing work so I agree to always have a snack before you study. Good luck with the class.

    4. Hello Erica, this is my first time taking an online class, what I found out from this class is that I can study anywhere is most comfortable to me and any time through the day. I don't like to be limited, I love to be free and do things when I find a suitable time for me to do so. however, I also like a quite and lightened room to study in with no noise at all, so I don't get distracted and stay focused on what I have in my hand. Good luck with the class.

Well this isn't my first time in college, my college experiences before weren't so well. I had attended a different college in northern California and we weren't offered a class like this. I probably would have been more successful in college, I ended up quitting because I thought it was to much. Now that I have started school here I am motivated to finish school and I have people to support me with school, unlike before. My experience with this college so far is wonderful. Its different, more clear for me. The other college I had attended was confusing and it was difficult to get in contact with a counselor. I am enjoying my experience here and this class is helping me so far and I am motivated to keep going.

  6. 1. What is your ideal environment for learning? What study strategies work best for you?

Typically, my ideal environment for learning like most students a nice atmosphere where I am alone. I do not like to be bothered by someone while studying or doing my homework. I can get distracted off of the smallest stuff and when I do allow that to happen, it’s hard for me to focus. I’ve learned to ignore it and not let it get to me. Sometimes, the best strategies that work for me to is listening to music (that’s not too loud). It motives me and allows me to focus on my work while listening to motivational music. I truly believe music speaks to me when I have nothing to say and puts me in a better mood.

    3. Write about your experiences in college so far. Have you been able to apply anything learned in this class?

College has helped me tremendously with not only finding myself but who I need to be and do for the rest of my life. It’s made me realize what the real world is about and how anything is possible to achieve. Out of the 4 semesters I’ve been here Cuyamaca College, I can honestly say this Counseling is one of my favorite classes, and no I’m not just saying that. It’s made me sit down and realize what I am capable of doing and how to reward myself and gain self-confidence. Marsha has been a very helpful professor and has answered every question that I had. I did not think this class would have such a huge impact on me but it surprisingly did.

  7. My ideal environment for studying must have quite studying place with a lot a lot of light, i like it also to be foodfree, meaning i don't like to eat or snack while i study, and finally my studying process always involves studying in a group because it helps me feel more comfortable and less stressed about the work i am doing. my highest multiple intelligence are logical mathematical which is my favorite because i am good in solving math problems it makes sense to me and i find it easier than writing an essay about a topic i am not even interested in. my experience in college is not as bad as i thought it would be, i have always been kind of lazy at high school but once i got to college i am more productive i feel like by working hard in here i am getting myself the successful future i want and i have in mind.

You have just been assigned a 10 page term paper. something like this assignment would stress me a lot, the first thing i would do is plan ahead and not leave it to the last minute before its due to start working on it. i will make an outline for what i will do each day to add more to that paper, also i will ask my instructor to see if my topics and the subjects i chose is well developed and meets the requirements, then i would motivate myself to stick to my plan so by the time the assignment is due i will be done with it already and it is ready to submit.

    1. Hi Ragheed,
I agree about what you said when you assigned for 10 page. For me this will be hard when I read number 10, the number makes me stressed itself, but when I like what I am writing about, I usually don't care if i have to write 10 or 20 pages, and it is going to be easier for me if I experienced what I am writing about and this will help me a lot to get my assignment don on time without any fears.
On the other hand, I find it hard to me when I have to write about something I don't understand, in this case I try to ask question to myself so I know I have something to write about and after that I start my writing.

    2. You are both correct in that the key is to start early. Too many students wait until the last minute to begin and this causes stress which makes it even more difficult to complete the assignment.

  8. 1. What is your ideal environment for learning? What study strategies work best for you?
My ideal environment for learning is to be in a quiet area with no interruptions. I prefer to work alone because I feel as though I'm able to get things done better and quicker. The study strategies that work best for me is highlighting and taking notes so that I'm able to review the most important information. I'm also very visual I like to see things and get a good picture of them to understand what is being talked about.

    3. Write about your experiences in college so far. Have you been able to use anything learned in this class.
College so far has been good! It's been hard getting used to doing things online and remembering what needs to be done but I'm trying. So far I have realized that going online every Monday and making a checklist of what needs to be done helps me complete things on time or even before the due date. Doing this also helps me make my life easier and after doing the personality test I see why. This class and report helped me realize what strategies work best for me! The DWYA report especially helped me with learning what type of person I am and what works best for me.

    4. Assigned a 10 page term paper.
I have learned that making sure I don't procasinate is the first priority. I make sure that I set aside time for myself to be alone and have full focus on the paper that I am writing. Also before starting the paper I like to do "brainstorming" and that is where I take a blank paper and write different things that I want to write about and that helps me stay on topic. I also might take a little time to do research on what I'm writing about so that half way through I don't run out of things to talk about and so that I can write a good paper. These strategies will help me complete a 10 page paper.

  9. I like to study when listening to music and also when know one is around me.I also have to be really comfortable when I study or I wont be focused. The most important thing is my mind has to be cleared from all other things. Some study strategies that work from me is writing notes. Also, some other strategies are reading out loud. I also like to highlight a lot of things that I don't understand and keep doing them over and over again.

If I had a 10 page paper To write I would definitely have to have a lot of motivation. One thing about my personality type is I would have to be really organized for this paper. I also would have to make sure this is done on time and not wait until last second to do it.

  11. 1. What is your ideal environment for learning? What study strategies work best for you?

My ideal environment for learning is somewhere that is cool and has music playing in the background. Where there are people talking and where I can have someone to talk through my homework with. I also like to listen to music when I do my homework because it helps me concentrate on what I’m doing. Also chewing gum really helps me with what I’m doing because I like to move around a lot and I can not always do that so chewing gum really helps. Studying in a group really helps because it allows me to talk through certain questions that don’t make sense in my head. Working one-on-one helps even more because the person I’m with will give me undivided attention to work through the question and make sure I understand it.

    3. Write about your experiences in college so far. Have you been able to apply anything learned in this class?

My college experience is going pretty good so far. There is just a lot of work to do and it is way different than my high school experience. I did not realize that in college you can’t re-do assignments for a better grade, and that the teachers go through the power points so fast. Overall I have been able to meet a lot of people and make a lot of new friends. I think that the rest of college is going to be even better than the first few weeks.

  13. Hey Class!! I hope you guys are doing great.

This is the first year for me attending cuyamaca and grossmont college. Just to give some background informations I used to go to University of Southern Maine which is totally different from San Diego. My experience in college is unsatisfied because of the workers here, they do not give clear answers and seem to be confused about what they are doing. When I first applied for school here, I came to ask questions at counselling, admissions, financial aid, and they told me that this is a busy school and they suggest me to go to Cuyamaca and ask because grossmont is full, when they said that I felt like I was unwelcomed and it seemed like they don’t want anymore students. For this reason I decided to take counseling class because I know I would help me prepare for school more. I think this is a great class and I will suggest students to take it if they are unfamiliar of how college is.

My ideal of environment learning is somewhere quite. I like paying attention on what I am learning; therefore quite environment is really important for me. I always try to avoid sound when I am trying to study because background sounds get me easily distracted. I like studying with bright light because they keep me awake and focused. I like to snake sometimes when I am studying because it makes me feel like I am not forced to do the work. I prefer studying in warm temperature because cold temperature usually gets me sleepy. I sometimes like to play music when I am studying because it helps me relaxes. I prefer studying at the library where I see a lot of students studying because it motivates me to work more for school and stay longer on doing homeworks.

  14. 1. What is your ideal environment for learning? What study strategies work best for you?

My ideal environment for learning is a quite atmosphere that would help me best in studying. I don't like to get distracted by any noise specially when I need to finish my homework on time, I like studying in a quite place so I focus on the material better. I also like to have snacks when I study specially when I am happy with the subject that I am reading, I used to do that a lot for some reasons, one of my reason is I don't like to be called by anyone to have a meal, that's why I have snacks so I know I am not wasting my time on meals's period. I also like to study on my bed when I read something and I like to sit on a chair with a desk if I have to use my hands.

    7. You are taking a required course for your major and it is taught by only one professor. You dislike this professor.

Well, if I want to learn something and achieve my goals, I will not be able to like or dislike any of my major's professors, there is no time for that.
Since I attended a High School in Syria, I had too many teachers that I didn't like, they were my nightmare, when they come to teach us I feel upset because something bad will happen, but this problem didin't stop me from achieving what I want to get my high school, I did have roadblocks that time, but I skipped them and I succeed.
I still remember what my teacher said one day, she said:"If you love what you study, you are going to love who is teaching you."
So her words still in my mind. If I didn't like my professor, I will try to love what he is teaching so I can appreciate his work later on.

  15. 1. What is your ideal environment for learning? What study strategies work best for you?

My ideal environment for learning is a very quiet and peaceful environment. I have to be in a quiet place in order to do my work. I feel that when I am in a very peaceful environment I have better concentration. For example, I love going to the library to go read, or the beach when it is lonely. Some study strategies that work best for me are turning off my phone when I study, because my phone is my number one distraction. Another study strategy that I like to utilize is rewarding myself afterwards that way I can really look forward to finishing what I need.

    4. You have just been assigned a 10 page term paper.

If I had been assigned a 10 page term paper I would first of all at least plan it out that same day. I am a very well organized person, and I always like to make sure I do things the right way. Secondly, I would try to plan the days in which I would actually work on it because I can be a big time procrastinator. I would set everyday goals of how much I should be accomplishing. Lastly, I always like to go over my work and make sure everything is well done and looks like a polished gem. Another thing is that I would make sure it is on time just how I always like things to be.

  16. 1. My ideal environment for learning is a quiet and solitude work area. For me to effectively do my work I must be in a place where I feel comfortable and it needs to be comfortable. Music also tends to be a good way for me to concentrate better. Though it can’t be too loud or I’ll just focus on that more than the work I’m supposed to be doing. Having snacks at the ready is good too. So I don’t have to get up and lose my concentration. Most of the time I’ll do my work while on my bed, as I find it most comfortable being within my room.

    11. If I had to do a five minute presentation for an art history class I would rock it. Not because I’m real interested in art history, cause I’m not, but I can make some good power points when I need to. They’re really fun. I also like doing the research necessary for presentations. It’s pretty fun learning all those new things you just didn’t know before. I would set up an entire two days just for research and then another one for putting together the presentation. Now the part I do not like, is the presenting part. I do not do well in front of crowds. My anxiety tends to get the better of me and I just freeze.

  17. What is your ideal environment for learning? What study strategies work best for you?

My ideal environment for learning is somewhere quiet with a desk. I prefer quiet areas because it allows me to concentrate more on what I am reading which helps me memorize the material even faster. I have also realized that I work faster and more efficiently while sitting on a desk rather than a couch or bed. It forces me to stay focused until all of my work is complete.

  18. You have just been assigned a 10 page term paper.

Hypothetically, If I were assigned a 10 page term paper, I would begin working on it as soon as possible. Being a judging type, I am very organized and must start and complete assignments way before the due date. It stresses me out when I haven’t completed an assignment because it doesn't allow me to become active in any of my hobbies due to the fact that I have higher priorities, such as school work. Also, I like to manage my time efficiently and finish all my tasks on time.

  19. According to the MI Advantage assessment, my highest intelligences were in existential, naturalist, logical-mathematical, and spatial intelligences. Some of the career paths that came up as a best match for me were forest and conservation technicians, foresters, atmospheric and space scientist, soil and plant scientists, soil and water conservationists, biologists, and coroners. The assessment even showed that I could be an earth or conservation science teacher, which is funny because I hate public speaking. These were the few that I found to be interesting because I was already planning on going into the science field. With this knowledge, it will help me find a more concrete major to focus on for my associate’s degree as well as for my bachelor’s degree.

  20. Since I am fairly certain I will remain a botany major, I know there is only a couple instructors for the ornamental horticulture department at Cuyamaca. If for some reason I end up not getting along with the teacher or disapprove of their teaching methods, I would try my best to work around them and their criteria. Furthermore I would try to study how they function in the classroom and what methods work best for them. Let me just paint a picture for you all: the instructor has a very specific structure in the course, expecting textbook definitions that are not open to interpretation to the students. This particular instructor strongly encourages group work and social interaction with other students in the class. Hypothetically I would have to work on my memorization skills to get the definitions permanently embedded in my skull as well as work on my social skills. For me, it is not about the instructor or other students liking me as an individual, it is more about learning and retaining as much knowledge as possible from the course. I go into a classroom ready to learn, not to win a popularity contest.

  21. My ideal environment for learning is the type that is cool and quiet. When I am in my room with no noise being made, I am able to concentrate much better than if I am surrounded by people who have no decency to see that I am trying to get work done. If I am alone in my room, is when I tend get a lot of my work done at a good pace, and usually end up with a good grade on the assignment. Study strategies that work best for me are when I have flashcards that I test myself off of. Almost every time I make flashcards to study off of is when I find myself testing higher on tests.

  22. After applying what I have learned so far in this course, now when I get assigned a ten page term paper, I will take it on in a much different way than I would have before. In the past, I would leave that paper to the side until I came to the realization that it is due the next day, causing me to stay up all night the night before it is due. No, with these great learning methods that have been taught to me through this class, I will plan out how I will construct this essay in order to have it done before the due date, so that I could have even more time to edit and perfect the paper.

  23. My ideal environment for learning is very simple for me, as long I am in a room alone or with a small group I don't mind. I do like to listen to music while studying and having low lights in the room behind me. As far as the temperature inside goes, not too hot or too cold. I like to have headphones on as I study and believe it or not I listen to loud heavy metalcore music as I study, but hey, as long as it works right? For me it does not have to be a desk with a straight chair to sit on and start studying, I usually lay down on my couch and work on my assignments.

You have to study for a challenging math test.

I would tackle this challenging math test a lot easier than I would've before taking this class. Usually I would wait till the last couple days or even the very last day. But not anymore. I am the type of person who works on his due papers and homework usually a day before they’re due but I usually work on a burst of energy which is the good part of this behavior. But now I am trying to work on my assignments as soon as I get the chance or having some free time.

  24. My ideal learning environment is in more of a chilled place with all of the lights on. I do listen to music but it is distracting. I try to lessen my distractions and prefer working or studying alone. I like to drink or snack on things while I'm working or studying because it gives me something to do instead of having a boring study session. I cannot seem to focus on my work if I'm too comfortable so for me, it's better to be seated up in a desk or some sort of table. i get too relaxed in a couch or bed when doing my work and have less motivation to get it finished.

  25. The ideal learning environment for me is somewhere cool, is bright with lots of light and quiet with little to no distractions. It does not have to be formal or informal, I can be successful in either, and it could also be outside when practical. I think this is accurate for me and have found that I often study in this type of environment. At home I study on the couch and in my office at my desk, I keep the temperature low with fans and air conditioning and I listen to quiet, classical music, no tv. and no loud music or anything with a fast rhythm. I find that if I do have loud noises in the background or the tv. on I am easily distracted and cannot complete the task at hand. I often create rhythmic patterns or songs to help remember the information I am studying and make it easy to recall when taking tests or applying the information in real life occurrences. Not to say that I’m Mozart but even synching the information to Old MacDonald or other simple songs helps me remember information much better.

  26. My top two multiple intelligences are Naturalist and Musical. I agree with this assessment because I feel I am musically inclined having been in band for eight years playing the clarinet and French horn. I also care about the environment and the effects of pollution on our planet. The recommended careers I received were animal sciences, geographer, microbiology and computer and information science. The seemed to be similar for the most part keeping a theme of working with animals, plants and nature. I had never thought of seeking a career in this field and had always thought I would work with computers. It has opened my mind to considering new options because I better understand the importance of finding a career that makes me happy and I find fun and interesting.

  27. My ideal environment for learning would be in a warm, brightly lite room. I like to listen to music while I work but in a quiet room. Drawing pictures and talking about what I just learned helps me understand it and interpret it. I can use my personality to manipulate how I learn and be able to get the most out of what the instructor teaches. I cannot learn in cold weather because the cold puts me to sleep. Therefore, it is hard for me to learn in a classroom setting. However, I am able to focus as long as I put my mind to it. I generally learn best in comfortable surroundings, I don't learn as well in a hard desk chair. In order for me to understand and remember the material is to listen to music and draw pictures that represent what I learned. I like to walk around when I have been sitting for a while to refresh my mind and not get bored and end up not wanting to do the studying needed.

  28. 1.What is your ideal environment for learning? What study strategies work best for you?
The ideal learning environment is one with dim light, cool temperatures and little mobility. I can't study efficiently if there is too much light in the room or if it's too sunny. I prefer to work at night when it's dark. I'm more comfortable studying in a cool room or when it's cold outside versus when it's warm or hot. I need to sit still in order to study because if I allow myself to move around, I'll never get anything done. My study environment also has to be quiet, because the music I'm playing in my headphones. Any outside noise tends to distract me.
The study strategies that work best for me is using flashcards or just rereading the material multiple times. Repetition works really well for me and if I do something constantly it just becomes second nature.

2.What are your highest multiple intelligence's and what careers do they suggest?
My highest multiple intelligence's were existential, linguistic, and naturalist. I think this is so important to be aware of. Knowing our where we fall with the different types of “intelligence's” helps us learn how we approach all aspects of our lives. The careers suggest to me based on these intelligence's were different types of teachers, anthropologist, archaeologist, historians, economist, and sociologist. I agree with the teachers and sociologist choices. I do want to teach some day. I thought it was interesting that it gave the other options, I never thought about those choices, but now I'm considering them.

    4. You have just been assigned a 10 page term paper.
In past experiences I would have procrastinated and written the paper the night before it was due. I work better when I'm stressed out, but I know it isn't good. Utilizing my intelligence's and learning strategies, I would outline what I plan on writing about. I would research the topic and try to find some common ground with it, because the assessment said that I tend to prefer to work with things I can relate to. I'd try to see how what I'm writing about effects me and the rest of the population. If I can try to make it interesting and relatable, I can complete the assignment without being stressed out.

  29. My college experience so far has been intense, but successful. Things I learned about my personality I can use to my advantage in the classroom setting. I used to be confused on how to talk to my professor on things I need more understanding on. Now I am able to comfortably walk up to my professor and ask any question I have with the material we learned that day. One of my professor's is an introvert, so with knowing this I was able to set aside time with her to understand in more depth what the material we learned meant. Being able to manipulate my personality and learning preference to better my understanding comes as an extreme advantage when it comes to learning newer material.

    1. Until recently I felt the similarly about talking to professors. Years ago I actually felt very shy about asking things in front of the class; however, as I grew and came back to school, I over came the fears I had and I am now able to ask questions (when I have them) or be involved with the class as much as needed to be able to understand. Great job on adapting to make sure that you can learn the material necessary. I think that being able to adapt to something or situations will be an asset later on in life. Good work.

  30. 8. You are taking a business class and have been assigned a group project to design a small business. It is worth 50% of your grade. One of the group members wants to control the group and the others seem to be rebelling.
This project seems to be the make it or break it for the classes grades'. If this happened i would try to work things out. Seeing that nobody wants to go with the guy's idea and he's the only one for it, i would try to tell the guy none likes it so let's just see their ideas and see how it goes. Then after the other group members proposed their ideas we can try to do a combination of everyone's ideas so there is no dissatisfaction.

  31. Hello everyone,
My ideal environment for learning is that I have to study when it is very sunny or there is a lot of lightning in a room. It also has to be very quiet without any noise around in order for my brain to focus and to accomplish everything I need. I also like to snack while doing my work so I do not get bored and keep myself somehow entertained. I really hate having music while doing homework because it causes me a lot of distractions unlike a lot of people who prefer the exact opposite. My learning strategies are that I keep myself organized and do everything in order. I also like to use planners and highlights because I tend to write a lot as well.

  32. Hello again,
My college experience has been great and I have learned a lot from this class. For example: I learned to improve my learning strategies and be able to have a clear picture of my preferred ideal learning environment. Also, this class helped me learn more about my personality from the DWYA, which gave me a detailed description of myself and learn about my weakness to help improve them, and my strengths to maintain them. Also, from doing the change a habit project, I learned that I am capable of doing and changing anything I am willing to change if I worked hard for it.

  33. 1. What is your ideal environment for learning? What study strategies work best for you?
My ideal environment for learning is at a library in a comfortable chair, sequestered alone without any distractions. I would have Beethoven quietly playing to block out any small environmental noises. I would have a computer available as well as a desk to access whatever information I needed to access. I have read that turning a light on when you study every time helps train your mind to study whenever that light is turned on again (people too can be trained liked Pavlov’s dogs) so there would be a low light that I could flick on to turn on my “studying brain.” I would have eaten a little snack prior to sitting down to study, enough to satiate me, but not too much to make me sleepy. I would have chapstick and water. It would either be later at night or earlier in the morning and I would know that my kids are safe at school and my house was clean at home.

  34. My two highest multiple intelligence categories are linguistic and logical-mathematical. They suggest all sorts of engineering and technical careers that I probably would be very good at but have no real interest in. I suppose if I was 18 again and just starting out in college and had motivation, I would be interested in computer programming and aerospace engineering like my MI reports suggest would be well matched to me, but I am 35 and that just isn’t where my passion is. Money isn’t the most important factor with me, but if it was I might be more willing to change my focus because I know that engineering careers in high demand and pay well. The careers suggested by my DWYA report are much more closely aligned with what I want to do.

  35. What is your ideal environment for learning? What study strategies work best for you?

When I first read the question, I immediately thought about a quite room with bright lights and comfortable chair and desk. This environment work best for me because I get distracted easily so I always prefer to be and study alone so nothing and no one distracts me. Also, I only sometimes like to study in small groups especially in classes like math. Since I don't understand all math's material, I sometimes need someone studies with me so we can explain the material to each other. As long as I apply these little things when I start studying, I reach success easier than any other different atmosphere.

  36. You are taking a required course for your major and it is taught by only one professor. You dislike this professor.

I actually have been through this last semester in English class. the class wasn't taught by one teacher only, but this class was the most suitable one for my schedule and I had to take it because I didn't want to waste that semester without taking that class. I knew it will be a very hard class with a tough teacher since the first day but I did't drop it, I kept motivating myself that everything will be good and I will pass this class like any other class. I encouraged myself as much as I could and never gave up with this class or with the teacher even though she was really hard and gives tons of in class and out of the class homework. I never stopped studying for it, I actually spent %90 of my time on this class and %10 for the other two classes beside 32 hours a week for my work. However, the beginning wasn't easy at all, my grades were awful, but they encouraged me to work harder until I ended up with an A grade out of that class. I got super tired and super overwhelmed, I even lost weights because I couldn't spend time on eating, but the only thing that made me keep going is that the A grade is my goal in this class so I did my best to gain it, so the end was my first success toward my goals.

  37. 1. What is your ideal environment for learning? What study strategies work best for you?

My ideal environment for learning is the type that is cool and quiet with dimmed lights. When I am in my room with no noise being made, I kind of put on low music and I am able to concentrate much better than if I am surrounded by people who dont care that I am trying to get work done. If I am alone in my room, with low music and dimmed lights is when I tend get a lot of my work done at a good pace and more productively, its worth it because i end up with a good grade on the assignment. Study strategies that work best for me are when I memorize my self with it, read it tons of times until i have it fluently. I always get good grades with this strategy.

    3. Write about your experiences in college so far. Have you been able to apply anything learned in this class?

College has helped me A LOT! not only finding myself who i am not but who I need to be and do for the rest of my life. It’s made me realize what the real adult world is about and how anything is possible to achieve no matter what. I have been in college for 1 semester so far and I can honestly say this Counseling is one of my favorite classes. It’s made me realize what I am capable of doing and how to reward myself and gain self-confidence & go out there do what i need to do to be successful .

  38. 3.From this course, I have been able to see the different personality types in people now. I have met people with similar types to me and also different ones. For example, I actually have encountered a professor with a different personality type from myself. My English 109 professor is more of an introvert as where I am an extravert. We have had some issues, but I am learning to accommodate to her. It is difficult for me though because she lectures for 4 hours, where I would rather just have a group discussion. But we both have something in common; we are judgers. We like to be organized and be as clear as possible.

    1. 7.I am currently enrolled in a class that I do not like the teacher. I didn’t have a choice in this class; it was the only one that would accommodate with my school and work schedule. I have learned that I must motivate myself rather than rely on her too. She does not care for me or my grade; she is simply there because it is her job. It is the teachers rude remarks that make me want to succeed to show her I am capable of doing everything she asks. No matter what obstacle she may throw my way, I am ready to take it on.

  39. My ideal environment for learning is sitting on a desk rather than a couch because I won’t feel the urge to want to fall asleep. I prefer to sit in a room with dimmed lights and very soft or no music playing in the background at all because I feel like I can get my work done quickly and more efficiently. I can work alone as well as work with others. In my opinion, working with others is helpful when it comes to asking each other questions about something you do not understand, testing each other while studying for a test, and even motivating each other.

I am can do exactly what you like to do. I really don't like to be sitting on a couch because it is not a studying style for me. I like to sit on a desk so that I can see everything and I can have all my work in front of me. I would just add to have a cool environment so that it is nice a relaxed. I also can work with a group because it persuades others who dont like to study so that they study and learn.

  40. 2. Knowing I am a judger, If I were assigned a ten page paper I would motivate myself to try my best to work on it as soon as it was assigned to me. Doing so can reduce my stress level because I did not push the assignment to the side and wait till last minute to complete it. I have also found myself doing better on assignments in which I worked on as soon as it was assigned to me rather than waiting until the day before it is due and becoming immensely overwhelmed and rushing to get it done.

  41. My ideal learning environment would include a quiet atmosphere. I don't have a problem with hard wood desks and chairs but I would prefer a nice comfortable couch and table to study on. Sometimes I enjoy playing music while I study because it makes it more entertaining and helps time pass faster. So far during my college experience, I have been able to apply some of the studying techniques I have learned in this class to the material. One of the best studying strategies that work for me include making flashcards with terms on one side and definitions on the other. I look at the flashcards until they are memorized and it helps make studying easier for me.

Based on what I have learned about motivation and studying techniques, I would apply these skills to this assignment and do my best to finish on task without the act of procrasinating throughout the way. Motivation is key when it comes to finshing big assignments. I would apply an organized plan for how to get the ten page assignment done on time, and then motivate myself in different ways in order to go through with it. I would use reward techniques to push myself through and avoid procrasination along the way as well as treating myself with a reward after every page is done.

Going to a cafe store is nice for me because I can put my head phones on just do work and zone out everyone.

  44. 1) My ideal learning environment will include sitting on a desk with a chair being in a calm silent place like the library. Where it has a cool atmosphere and it's not warm. I would at least want to work with one other, but as long as this person does not distract me. I am easily distracted. Like I mentioned Before, the library would be a good place to stay. It doesn't allow noise so it's a big advantage.

    3) Some of my experiences so far in college, is that I am aware that it's way different from high school. High school seemed to be a place where everyone is trying to fit in and be the same. While in college everyone is very different with different personality types. I met different people with different personalities. For instance, my psychology professor. I am more of a sensing type while he's an inuitive. While I look for specific information, he seeks quick insights. He creates his own direction and I follow them. But despite our differences I still managed to keep up with him.

Recently, I have not been studying as well due to the hot weather, it makes me sort of lazy. I like to have some sort of noise in the background whether it's music or the t.v. I sort of get distracted with my thoughts in pure quietness if that mess any sense. I also have trouble working staying completely still, so I enjoy an area were I can sort of move around at my pace. I do not have trouble when working with others, so anytime I'm able to have someone to work with, I do not mind.

I would work steadily on the paper and generally keep the paper in order and focused on the topic. The paper will be turned in finished no matter what, it will meet the 10 page requirement. Since I'm a little bit more of the thinker type, I will make sure the material is clear and logical. Near the end, I would probably provide some analysis of the issue presented in order to be fair for the reader to keep them interested. Whatever it is that is in my paper needs to be true information and free from error.

  50. Personally, my ideal learning environment is what I consider home away from home. I prefer to work at my best friends house in a cool room sitting next to him and discussing our assignments. He lives up the street from me and it is very easy for me to get to his house by walking. He always has food and drinks in his home which we both help ourselves to. I enjoy working in a relaxed manner where I can take my time with an assignment knowing that when I finish the assignment I can play some games.

When studying for a tough upcoming math test, I often get all of my work out from the last two weeks of work for the test. I surround myself in math homework and lessons learned in class. Then I begin to study. I carefully review each paper skimming through problems and looking for problems that I do not recognize or would have difficulty assessing.

  51. 1. My ideal learning environment is somewhat quiet, well lit (not extremely bright), and in a chair at a desk. I like it to be cold when I am studying and working, and I usually like to work alone but can work within groups. I like to work alone because I think I can focus a lot better. I don't like to snack but will make the exception if necessary, but I do like to have a drink on hand. ~The study strategies that work best for me are as follows: highlighting materials in different colors, making flash cards and going over them on a constant basis, teaching/talking with someone about what I have learned, and asking lots of questions to my professors when I am having a difficult time understanding.

    7. In this scenario I would try to get past any dislikes I had for the professor by focusing on my studies, applying the above stated strategies for studying, and again asking as many questions as possibly so that I make sure that I am following as accurately as possible. I think that in a situation like this it is important to overlook all else and focus on what it is that I am there for: to get a good grade and graduate college.

  52. If I signed up for a philosophy class to meet a humanities requirement yet the vocabulary was unfamiliar I would take time to make flashcards. Flashcards are such an easy yet helpful way to remember vocabulary. Although making flashcards can be time consuming they later save up so much time. Being an easy carry on, while walking from class to class, the bus stop, during a 10 minute lunch break at work, just about anywhere. Making flashcards and practicing and learning the words before attending the next class will help you understand what the professor is talking about.
