How can you take steps toward being a genius by being selective at school, at work or in your personal life?

Many students have difficulties with writing assignments because of writer’s block. Read the section on writer’s block in the text and comment on some ideas that you can use to overcome it.

Write some intention statements about what you will do to become a better writer or note taker.

Do you have any ideas about how to relax while speaking in public?

"Writer's block" may be very frustrating at times. You're trying to write a paper but somehow you just can't think of anything to write or discuss. A good tip to helping fight "writer's block" would be to brainstorm before writing. Using a blank paper write down key points, word, topics, main ideas anything that would help form some type of idea in your mind to begin writing. I do this a lot and I'm always able to go back and see what quotes I decided on using or what websites I liked to use as references.

Public speaking is not my favorite thing to do and to be honest all throughout high school I dreaded it. It felt great completing a speech but for some reason I could never understand why I would feel so anxious and nervous before one. It helps to be prepared and know what you're talking about. Making sure to breath before you begin to talk and having a paper in front of you helps if you forget what you were going to say. Also once you begin the speech you suddenly feel better and you realize it's not to bad. I now am better at them and it just takes doing them over and over again. ( My latest speech was at my cousin's wedding! I was the maid of honor and I had to speak into a microphone in front of 400 people. Yes 400! Surprisingly I wasn't nervous and I believe it was because I was well prepared and made sure not to over think it.

    1. Hi Heather, I completely understand and can relate to you when you said that public speaking is not your favorite thing to do. Being prepared and going over what you may talk about infront of people can help so much because you already know what your going to say without studdering. Congrats on talking to 400 people I still do not think I can do that but that is amazing! keep it up!

    - Having writer's block sucks because when you need to write a huge research paper and your struggling by not knowing what to write about is tough. Something that always helps me is to brainstorm. I sometimes just jot down things that I want to say it doesn't matter what order as long as I have it written down so that way I know that is something I may want to write about. Another things is to free write, this can help in may ways by getting your brain warmed up with things to say.

    2. Do you have any ideas about how to relax while speaking in public?
    - I am a very outgoing person who is an extravot but I completely dislike public speaking. I do not like it what so ever because I get nervous and I feel as though if I mess up or say something wrong in front of thousands of people they would laugh at me. Some ideas to be relaxed that have helped me would be, writing a couple notes down, jotting things that I want to say, and being well prepared. I feel as though writing a couple notes will help me talk efficiently along with jotting things down because it helps my confidence. Always having something to eat before any speech helps me only because then I won't get butterflies in my stomach. These ideas helped me when I had to talk in front of thousands of people who would donate money to a charity I was volunteering for.

I am an out going person who likes to communicate with people, but in public I get nerves’ at first. After several times of speaking out in public it becomes easier to relax. I have worked on how to relax while speaking out in public, I always claim myself down and not care whether people are disliking or laughing at my public speaking. I always try to focus on myself and what I am saying, I always try not to make eye contact with people I rather look at there hair and it seems like I am making eye contact. I try to avoid anything that gets me nerves or shaking.

Many people have difficulties because of having a hard time to understand the idea of the block. I always try to summarize the idea of the text and write down what is important. I usually highlight the important things and try to make it simple and break down the words so it is easy for me to understand. I always get the main point and write about what I understand from the text.

    1. Hello Farah,
I like the way that you use different technique when you doing your public speech. I totally agree with you, because sometimes when we look straight up at the people, we can easily get confuse. Looking at their hair is good way why not. Longest you do not get confuse or start to shake.
Good job on how you controlling yourself.

    2. I think most people fear public speaking like myself because we are afraid of saying the wrong thing or even stuttering and everyone being present to see that. But when it all comes down to it, it is not as bad as we think and everything turns out to be okay.

    3. Hello Farah! I personally look at the back walls of the classroom so it looks like I am actually making eye contact with the back row of students but it reality I am not looking at them at all! I do not know why but after every speech I have ever spoken, I shake uncontrollably and feel super anxious. I have encountered many issues with oral presentations just because I cannot handle having all the attention on me. I feel that people are naturally nervous but I am a completely different situation. In my future speeches, I want to break the tension early on to help the audience and myself get used to the idea of me speaking to them for the next 5-10 minutes. I hope this helped you out in some way, best wishes!

    4. Hi Farah,
I have the same as your problem, I get nervous when I speak in public, I forget what I want to say and I bumble.

When I was at the High School, I was asked to do a presentation in front of the students, but I couldn't do it, so my teacher told me that we can do it alone after the end of the day. That worked at the first time, but at the second time, she didn't help me so I had to do by myself and what I did is I kept looking at the screen and started reading till I finished. They clapped for me at the end, but I knew that I didn't do an awesome presentation because I didn't follow the rules.

    5. I have to do a lot of public speaking myself. I find the best way to relax is to casually speak to some people in the audience before the speech. If I can't do this, I try to start with introductions or something fun, like an ice breaker. These are all good suggestions for public speaking. Good job students!

If we believe that life is worth living, our belief will help us create the reality.
Write some intention statements about what you will do to become a better writer or note taker.

The best way to become a writer is to read as much as you can. Reading newspapers, books, magazines, and essays or article, help us write better. Also, taking English classes and learning grammar it can help us to write in the correct format. Most of us know how to write; however, our writing can have many mistakes not with spelling but as a correct sentence. Therefore, attending writing centers and reading, are the most effective way to improve our writing. I personally struggle when comes to write, but I always read as much as I can.
In addition, I follow these steps to improve my writing.
The art of natural, Is it obvious? , Deliver in small doses, Become a killer (of clichés), Make color count, Unpack sentences

Do you have any ideas about how to relax while speaking in public?
The best way to relax while speaking in public, is to know exactly what you going to talk about. Many of us attend to memorize everything that we write, as a result, we forget some of it, and we start to struggle. They best technique is to have a full confidence in yourself, and to imagine everyone is your friend. Also, practicing before any speech can prevent any mistakes, however, we are human, and it is natural that we make mistakes. Taking deep breath before starting helps our brain to focus more.

I wish we have the same professor as you. I asked one of my other professor if she got my papers or not because she said some of you have not done their paper work. I personally thought she did not get mine. I emailed her and said " Dear professor did you get my papers because i have not got my grade. Thank you and take your time no rush .Next thing she email me with bad attitude and she dropped my grade. And I do the most discussion writing. Ironically, how she dropped my grade.

  7. I need to become a better writer. I am not bad, but there is definitely room for improvement. I have to work on making a better outline to start out with. Also I need to work on my transitions from paragraph to paragraph. Finally I just need to tweak the details in my paragraph.
To be able to relax while speaking in public requires a lot of practice. You have to know what you are going to say before speaking. Make note card of what you are going to say and memorize them. Then practice in front of your mirror or front of someone else. Make sure you practice saying it aloud over and over again. Then make sure you are relaxed the night before and take deep breaths before the speech.

  9. "The essence of genius is knowing what to overlook" - listening and knowing the key terms and note taking help makes a better write/note taker. The techniques I have used include studying piece by piece, highlighting terms and defining them, and using flash cards. If I am really into a certain subject than I can go on and on with writing and not even pay attention to the time whereas if it's something I do not enjoy I always get distracted with the smallest things and I have learned to overcome that by reading and writing as I go so those notes can help me with taking notes/exams.As far as public speaking, I took a public speaking course with an amazing professor, Nancy Jennings here at Cuyamaca. She really helped me conquer my fears and letting all her students know that it's okay to be nervous and not to focus on the negatives too much. She helped me one on one and let me practice my public speaking when class was over and everyday would get better and better. So with her being there and guiding me she helped me a lot.

  10. "Do you have any ideas about how to relax while speaking in public?"
I personally despise public speaking. After reading this chapter, I have a couple of ideas on how to improve my public speaking skills, especially when it comes to pre-speech jitters. I do not like to be the center of attention, which is why speaking in front of a group of people is so nerve-racking to me. One of the things that will help me in the future is realizing that most of the people in the room would probably be nervous if they were in my place. Since we are in college, we have a higher maturity level than that of high school students. In the best set of circumstances, the audience will be polite and let you go through your speech. I feel that the key to a confident presentation is self-reassurance and avoiding self-doubt at all costs. As long as you know your topic inside and out, the only thing standing in the way of you getting full credit on your speech is your mindset.

    1. I agree that mindset is very important to success. Most people in the audience understand how difficult it is to speak and will be supportive, especially in college courses.

  11. Write some intention statements about what you will do to become a better writer or note taker.

In my opinion, to be a better writer or note taker is by starting some words in the beginning and develop them to be sentences and then paragraphs. Writing is a good way to understand and memorize the material, especially the complicated one, and it’s a good way to keep improving it. Also, taking notes is a good way to abbreviate time before the exams, because you easily can read the notes and take an idea about the whole topic, so when you start reading the topic, you will already know what is talking about, and this way will make it really easy to finish fast with good preparation.

  12. Write some intention statements about what you will do to become a better writer or note taker.

Typically, when I take notes on a lecture I am well prepared. But I will admit that I tend to get distracted and miss some of the information the teacher or instructor has said. For example, using my phone during lectures is a bad habit, because it keeps me from getting all of the information down. Also, not getting enough sleep can deeply impact my listening and note taking abilities, therefore I must always make sure I am actively listening and concentrating on what is being said. Lastly, I tend to skip meals before attending a lecture which I have realized effects me negatively. Thinking and concentrating on an empty stomach is not fun, so in order to become a better note taker I will put my phone away during lecture, get a full night of sleep, and eat before attending lectures.

  13. Do you have any ideas about how to relax while speaking in public?

A good technique I have used in the past and present to calm my nerves before speaking publicly is to practice reciting your speech before the presentation. When you practice, it not only allows you to know your information better, but it also makes you more confident in yourself because you know the material well. Before presentations, I practice publicly speaking way in advance in order to calm myself down and relax. Even practicing in front of friends and family is a good way to figure out your strengths and weaknesses in public speaking, such as having proper body conduct and speaking in a clear and confident voice.

  14. Do you have any ideas about how to relax while speaking in public?
My couple ideas about how to relax while speaking in public are; first, to be well prepared for what we are going to say and what things our speech should include and what should not. Second, it is better if we try our speech in front of the family or some friends to get rid of the fears of speaking in public. Third, we better keep repeating our speech and make sure that the grammar and the pronouncing of our speech are correct, and finally, it is better if we get some feedback from the family about our performance to know our weaknesses and fix them before giving the speech in public.

    - Many students have a difficulty with finding ways on how to begin their writing because they don't have sufficient ideas. Some of the ideas that I use to overcome it is by warming up my brain with different writing exercises. One of my favorite is a quick write. During the quick write I let my mind free and write anything that comes to my mind about the subject. After I have my one full page quick write, I gather different details I wrote and sum them up to get the main idea. That usually helps me get a good start on my writing. Brainstorming can also be a very good idea.

the way i like to improve my writing and note taking skills is that i focus on free writing that way i can jot down everything on my mind or anything that's being said in class on a paper in my own word, after that i can look at these ideas and create and essay in the correct form just by putting the ideas i had in a different wording

    2. Do you have any ideas about how to relax while speaking in public?
public speaking is one of my biggest challenges, where i find my self shaking and my voice totally changes, but i worked on it and i improved it by practicing public speaking, one of the things i do is that i clear my mind and i tell myself that i'm doing great and there's nothing to be worried about. practicing the public speaking helped me alot especially when i had to go to interviews and spoke in front of groups of people, so i worked on it and became way better that now i really have no problem in speaking in public.

  18. In my opinion, being a good writer or note taker depend on me because if I have the confident in myself I can create everything I want especially a paragraph or an essay so what I write is what I think if I think positively, I will write positive and if I write positive, I will be a good writer.

Our words can affect the others and when they do, that's mean our writing is good. that's why a lot of poets affect us by their words and their imagination.

So by experience, by having great expressions for the words you choose, I think they will be enough to be a good writer.

The most important think to be a note taker is to be patient while you are taking notes because when we hate something, we can't success in it if we didn't sacrifice and do it the right way. For example if I suppose to take notes in Bio's class and I fall asleep, that will not make me a good note taker because I lost my patient and that's required to be a good note taker. Don't lose your patience.

At work you can focus on doing the best you can do and not letting other people distract you from your job. You can make doing your best and being most efficient a challenge if you job is not stimulating enough. In your personal life, you can get rid or decide not to spend time on things that create drama. Some things I will intend to do to become a better note taker is to attend every class and find a good seat where I can listen and hear or see everything clearly. I also need to come prepared and bring paper and pen. Writing neatly will help me understand the notes I take, and writing the date of the lecture will help me find things easily. Use keywords and phrases in the notes taken but leave out unimportant words. Use abbreviations.

    2) Do you have any ideas about how to relax while speaking in public?
I still have trouble speaking in public and giving presentations but after reading chapter 8, I got some ideas on how to improve. In chapter 8 it says that if you are anxious, admit to yourself that you are anxious. You do not have to be perfect; it is okay to make mistakes. Making mistakes just shows you are human like the rest of us. Another good way to help is to take 3 to 5 deep breaths before presenting. Be positive and with experience you will get better. You will get better with the next few times you have a presentation.

In order to become a better writer and note taker, I must first be familiar with the topic I am writing or taking notes about. try to do as much research as possible in order to gather the most information about a certain topic. I must also read the writing requirements very accurately in order to meet all the requirements without missing anything. Also, try to attend all the classes in order to not miss anything the teacher speaks or writes about so you can put it down on your note card. Lastly, discuss the topic with other friends before writing or taking notes about it so you can see different points of view and have multiple of views when writing.

I would say to think less about the crowd, pay more attention on why your speaking about and treat it as a 'one on one' conversation, have confidence in what your saying, if you slip up don't pay attention to it, move forward and just say what you need to. And things will flow smoothly.

If you go unprepared, you will struggle in front of the audience, which will then cause you to not know what to say next. It is also important for me to actively take notes in order to avoid getting bored, which also leads to me becoming tired. What is really tough to overcome is becoming distracted by friends that sit close next to you, it is best to limit your interactions with your friends while in class in order to take effective notes. When taking notes it is best to stay organized by labeling your notes with a title and a date, followed by topics and details. The more organized you are, the more easier you will make it on yourself when looking over the notes.

Taking notes also keeps me awake during lectures because it keeps my mind thinking and I am active, thinking of ideas to write down or other details. I have found out that when I don't take notes, everything seems to be 10 times more boring, and I get mentally lazy which makes me very sleepy. Taking organized notes is really helpful especially when having to go back to them.

  33. Do you have any ideas about how to relax while speaking in public?

There are a lot of ways a person could relax himself by while preforming a speech. Speeches could be taught sometimes. I have had a lot of presentations and speeches and I came up with my own ways of relaxing myself, things I would recommend are, If you're afraid of looking into peoples eyes ( specially if there is a lot of people ) try to look above their eyes ( forehead ) the person you're looking at is not going to notice it, but it will make you more comfortable. If theres a part of your speech where you would play a video for the people, that is always a good time to think about what you will be talking about next and also is a good time to relax.

  34. Some ideas on ways to relax while public speaking are to practice the speech over and over again until presenting it almost becomes second nature to you. I also suggest practicing in front of your family or peers to get a better feel as to what you will be expecting when the day arrives. I always try to stay calm before delivering my speech by giving myself a positive pep -talk reminding myself that I will be fine and will do a great job. I personally do not mind presenting speeches in front of audiences even though I still get immensely nervous every single time. Feeling nervous and anxious is normal and I recommend taking deep breaths and counting to ten because it will calm your nerves and help you better your speech presentation.

  35. I have encountered writers block many times and it could be immensely frustrating and lead to losing any source of motivation to even write the paper. To overcome this issue I tend to jot down any possible ideas and topics, which come to mind so that I can go back and review them which will gradually help me resolve the issue. Sometimes researching on the internet can provide me with ideas on what I should write about and hopefully this will somewhat resolve my writers block.

  36. Many students have difficulties with writing assignments because of writer’s block. Read the section on writer’s block in the text and comment on some ideas that you can use to overcome it.

To help overcome writers block I believe the concept of free writing would work best for me. I find that when I tell myself to write whatever comes to mind I am more free to think about broader ideas and touch on concepts I wouldn’t have otherwise thought about. I do have to remind myself that brainstorming will not consist of brilliant and perfect ideas each and every time but if I freely explore many thoughts and ideas, I will create a more in depth analysis of the subject that will lead to a good paper. Another good tool to use is to brainstorm and if I feel as if I can’t come up with any new ideas, or expand on the ideas ive already thought of, step away from the assignment and return to the assignment at a later time with fresh eyes and ideas.

  37. Write some intention statements about what you will do to become a better writer or note taker.

In order to become a better note taker I should select a seat front and center in class, focus on the main ideas, attend every class/lecture, and keeping my notes neat and organized. By selecting a seat that is front and center of the class I will be able to better hear the lecture and see any visual aids used during the lecture. Furthermore I should also select a seat that is away from friends or near any distractions. By focusing on the main ideas I am better able to understand the important information and information that is more than likely to be on tests or quizzes. By attending every class I am able to get the most information possible and supplemental material to what is in the text book. I am also able to get a better understanding of what the teacher finds important and better knowledge of what to study for tests. By keeping my notes neat organized while taking them down I will better be able to complete review sessions and will be able to study more effectively and efficiently.

  38. Many people have a tendency to be nervous during public speaking. One way to help prevent anxiety during public speaking is to be prepared. That is one of the major keys is to practice until it is easy to present. Reciting a speech before you are to present it is a good way to make sure that when it is time to present, it is easily said to the audience. Taking deep breaths and using different techniques to help stay relaxed is a great way to help keep oneself calm. Staying positive is also one way to help motivate yourself to do good.

I intend to become a good note taker by trying my best to pay attention to the teacher talking.
I intend to become a good note taker by color coding my notes so I know what sections go with which.
I intend to become a better writer by starting my papers early so I am not rushed to finish them.
I intend to become a better writer by having someone proofread my papers before I turn them in.

Do you have any ideas about how to relax while speaking in public
Some ideas that I have for relaxing while public speaking is to one take a deep breath. Everyone there listening knows you’re nervous and they aren’t there to make fun of you, they are listening and supporting you. Also you can relax by practicing your speech. Without practicing what your going to say, your just winging it and winging it doesn’t always end up in the best situation if you do not know what you are doing. I also think that you can get rid of anxiety for public speaking by picturing the crowd in their underwear because it makes the crowd less intimidating for me, it makes me feel like they are just like me: vulnerable.

  41. Do you have any ideas about how to relax while speaking in public?

To be relaxed when speaking in public, it is important to be prepared physically and emotionally because sometimes sometimes emotions play in our public speaking. You should mostly go over your speech as much as you can until you are really comfortable and ready with it. If you go unprepared, you will struggle in front of the audience/class/crowd, which will then cause you to not know what to say. Before making a speech, take couple deep breaths in order to lower your anxiety , which will make you feel relaxed. This trick always helped me through the years since my freshman year ub high school. It really has worked and I’ve told my friends and it helped them as well.

    2. I like your ideas. I have used them myself as well and agree that being prepared is one of the best ways to overcome any anxiety about public speaking. I especially like how you suggest taking deep breaths to calm nerves. The oxygen to the brain really clears the mind and does calm one down when feeling out of sorts. Great job.

  42. Better Note Taker:
When it comes to taking notes, it is obviously necessary to make sure that you have all of the proper materials: pen, paper, etc. First, begin taking notes by writing the date on them so it is easy to organize and find when they are needed. The main idea of note taking is to copy down the materials that are on power points or key concepts that professors discuss in lectures. Also, if a professor is going to fast through information for you, it is helpful to learn phrases or symbols so you can write things down quicker.

    1. Public Speaking:
When it comes to public speaking, it is easier to use bullet points rather than writing out your whole speech word for word; that way it reminds of what topics you need to cover, but it also forces you to look at your audience. Eye contact is very important when it comes to speeches. Make sure to not exceed your time limit, but also make sure you are not rushing through it. By practicing in front of family or friends it helps gives you an idea of how long your speech is; it also allows people to give you advice on how you can better yourself.

  43. Many students have difficulties with writing assignments because of writer’s block. Read the section on writer’s block in the text and comment on some ideas that you can use to overcome it.:
To conquer writer's block, I usually write with a partner. While at some points this can be distracting, it can also help stimulate good material. Being social while writing helps me get ideas of what I should write for each paragraph. Often if I become stuck, I will brainstorm different ideas about the subject and begin to reread the material to see what I can add.

Do you have any ideas about how to relax while speaking in public?
When it comes to public speaking, the most important thing to do is to be prepared. Knowing the subject is half the battle and having the confidence to speak is the other half. Whenever I do a speech in front of group of people, I often bring something to drink, so if I get lost I can easily take a small drink and catch up to where I was in the speech. It is best to speak clearly, calmly and to be yourself.

  45. When dealing with writer's block there are a couple things that I do to get over it. I usually like to start a paper, of any sort, by putting things/possibilities into bubbles and branching out more ideas from there. I put anything I can possibly think of on paper in hopes of it stimulating some kind of game plan for how and what I am going to write. Another thing I like to do when I am really stuck in a rut, is to ask for someone for some perspective. Usually I either ask my professor, but if that is not possible for some reason I talk to my husband. If for some reason that doesn't work, I take a break and come back to it at another time.

  46. Write some intention statements about what you will do to become a better writer or note taker.
Some intention statements that will help me become a better writer and a better note taker would be, first, to go to class everytime you have class and sit in a place where you will not get distracted. For example your friends. Make sure you also pay attention to what the instructor/professor is saying. And make sure you also write down key ideas or anything the professor advises that might be on the test. And also make sure you study your notes so you can get an idea of what might pop up on the test. Also you should make sure to write neat so you can be able to understand your writing. Color coding can also help.

Do you have any ideas about how to relax while speaking in public?
Some ideas that I have to help relax while speaking in public would be to, first, breathe in and out a couple times. You should practice thoroughly. You practice for several reasons. You practice to remember your speech or your lines. You practice because it turns the act of speaking into more of an instinct. You practice because you become more familiar with what giving your speech and speaking up is like, so that if you do lose your way and your speech is derailed you have an easier time making your way back. You should also not worry about stumbles. What that means is that, you should never expect it to go perfect. Perfection takes years of practice, and none of the most world renowned speakers were as skilled right away.
